Collis Engineering Ltd forms part of the Signal House Group Ltd and is an established engineering company based in Alfreton, Derbyshire, providing specialist structural steel and engineering solutions across the Rail, Nuclear, Construction and Telecoms sectors.
Also, part of the Signal House Group is Michael Evans & Associates Ltd, our civil and structural engineering consultancy, which provides professional engineering services across a diverse range of projects, including civil and structural engineering, structural design, drainage and flooding, inspections and engineering consultancy.
Together, Collis Engineering and Michael Evans & Associates offer a broad range of technical expertise and engineering capability. We are now looking for an experienced Technical Director to lead, manage and further develop the engineering capability across both businesses
About the Role
This is a senior, hands-on position and an excellent opportunity for an experienced engineering design professional to take responsibility for the day-to-day management and development of our design function.
As a member of the Senior Management Team, you will work closely with the Managing Director and other departmental heads across the business, providing technical leadership while supporting the continued development and growth of the company.
The role combines technical leadership, people management and hands-on engineering design, so we are looking for someone who is equally comfortable managing a team and working directly on design projects.
Key Responsibilities
You will be responsible for:
- Leading the day-to-day management of the Collis Engineering Ltd Design Department and Michael Evans and Associates Ltd.
- Managing design staff, resources, information and associated commercial activities.
- Planning and allocating work across the design team and providing appropriate checking and supervision.
- Undertaking engineering design work as required as part of this fee-earning role.
- Liaising with external agencies and consultants regarding product approvals, technical queries, specifications and product information.
- Working closely with other departments across the business to ensure effective communication and delivery.
- Supporting Sales & Marketing to help maximise new and existing opportunities.
- Acting as the company's approval authority for new products, services and components.
- Supporting Quality, Safety and Environmental activities, including audits, management reviews and system changes.
- Leading and managing research, development and innovation activities within the business.
About You
To be successful in this role, you will ideally have:
- Network Rail CRE experience/qualification
- BEng/BSc in Engineering, HND or HNC
- A minimum of 5 years' experience working within engineering design
- Strong working knowledge of AutoCAD 2D
- Strong working knowledge of Autodesk Inventor 3D
- Good working knowledge of Microsoft 365
- Experience or understanding of document control requirements within an industrial environment
- Awareness of ISO 9001
- Experience of Bentley MicroStation would be beneficial but is not essential.
- CEng or IEng status would also be advantageous.
