We are seeking an enthusiastic colleague to complement our team of 11 consultant Plastic Surgeons, all with a subspecialty interest, predominantly based at both The James Cook University Hospital, Middlesbrough and The Friarage Hospital, Northallerton. We share the hand surgery service at South Tees with 3 orthopaedic colleagues, and with 5 orthopaedic colleagues across our wider University Hospitals Tees group.
This is a new locum consultant post. The successful candidate will be welcomed into our busy plastic surgery, hand surgery, peripheral nerve and orthopaedic surgery services. There will be a requirement to work collaboratively within the existing teams to provide a general elective and emergency hand surgery service with additional specific sub-specialty services to preferably include peripheral nerve injury and/or children’s hand surgery.
The intended start date is from October 2026.
We deliver a range of services including: adult and paediatric elective and emergency hand surgery, peripheral nerve injury care, tetraplegia upper limb reconstruction, breast reconstruction, head and neck surgery, lower limb trauma, skin cancer, vascular malformations, hypospadias, burns facility services, pressure sore and pelvic defect reconstruction, diabetic foot care, spinal injuries wound reconstruction, chest wall reconstruction, and electrochemotherapy.
There is a requirement to support our our orthoplastic hand surgery on call rota, which is a 1:6 rota supported by Mon-Fri scheduled daily trauma clinics, weekend triage clinics, hand trauma lists and daily access to additional shared emergency theatre lists for adult and paediatric patients.
Complex lower limb trauma management is supported by an Orthoplastic MDT group with job planned MDT meetings and clinics and use of both planned and emergency orthopaedic and plastic surgery theatre capacity. Our Major Trauma Centre services are located together on the James Cook site. A microvascular skill set is essential for this post to support our Major Trauma Centre services.
Our department offers a range of skin cancer services which include surgical excision, reconstruction at all levels of complexity, sentinel lymph node biopsy, block dissection, and electrochemotherapy. As a Burns Facility, we offer care to patients with burns that do not require resuscitation as part of the general plastic surgery service.
The post is predominantly based at both James Cook University Hospital and the Friarage General hospital with outlying spoke services around the area. As part of the University Hospitals Tees group structure, there will be an expectation to deliver services flexibly with the wider team at the North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust sites when required. The successful candidate will be expected to take part in the acute and elective hand surgery workload for the local population. The successful candidate should have undergone appropriate specialist training with entry on the GMC specialist register for Plastic Surgery and appropriate training in Hand Surgery.
This post is advertised on a whole time (10 PA basis), although any candidate who is unable to work full time will be eligible to apply and, if appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed in consultation with consultant colleagues, the Clinical Director and the Chief Medical Officer.
