Who we are
We are a small independent private practice in the centre of Tewkesbury, and we have been here since 1997. A good number of our patients have been coming to us for more than thirty years, which tells you most of what you need to know about how we work. Carefully, honestly, and for the long term.
We are not a high-volume practice, and we have no interest in becoming one. Work is planned properly, done properly and checked properly. Patients have described our principal as a master craftsman, and that same standard runs through everything here, including the hygiene chair.
What matters to us
One thing above everything else.
The patient’s needs come before our own.
That sounds obvious, and it isn’t. It shows up in whether you stay the extra five minutes when a patient needs it, whether you notice the thing nobody asked you to notice, and whether anything is ever too much trouble. The people we most enjoy working with are the ones who go beyond what was expected without being asked and who assume the better side of people, patients and colleagues alike.
The hygiene role we want to build
This is not a scale-and-polish list. We want a hygienist who takes periodontal health seriously, which means assessing properly, explaining clearly, building a real relationship with the patient, planning active treatment and then seeing the maintenance through. If perio is the part of the job you find most interesting rather than the part you get through, we should talk.
You would be building this rather than inheriting it. Our previous hygienist has moved on, so the diary is genuinely open, and you would have a proper say in how it is built, how long a perio appointment gets, and how recall and maintenance are structured. There is full nursing support, and there is the time to do the work properly, because we would rather see fewer patients well than more patients quickly.
If you have been somewhere that books thirty minutes and expects you to make it work in twenty, this will feel different, and that is deliberate.
Being honest about it
We are a small team, so you will know everyone and everyone will know you, and there is nowhere to hide on a difficult day. We are also in the middle of tightening up how we run, which means you would be joining at the point where standards are being written down and agreed rather than assumed. Some people love that and some people don’t, and it is worth knowing before you apply.
This is a long-term post, and we are looking for somebody who wants to settle. We will give you a real say in how the hygiene side is run, and we will invest in it properly, and the honest trade is that we are hoping for years rather than months. If you are looking for something to tide you over while you work towards something else, this is not the right job, and we would rather both of us knew that now than in six months.
You will need to be GDC registered as a hygienist and to already have the right to work in the UK, as we are not able to sponsor visas.
On travel: we are in the centre of Tewkesbury, and people come to us from Cheltenham, Gloucester, Worcester, Evesham and the villages between. None of that is too far in itself. What matters is whether it is a journey you will still be happy with on a wet Monday in February, so tell us your real situation rather than what you think we want to hear.
The practical bit
- Employed, £38 an hour, with full nursing support
- One to three days a week. Monday, Wednesday and Friday suit us best, but they are a preference and not a rule
- If you can only do certain days or want to build up over time, say so in your application rather than passing on it. For the right person we will build the week around you
- Start date: as soon as the right person can join us
How we will run the process
We will come back to you within two working days, and if it looks like a fit, we will get you in for a conversation the same week, because we know good people do not sit around waiting.
Before we appoint anybody, there is a paid clinical session, so you can see how we work, and we can see how you work. We would rather be straightforward about that than surprise you with it, and it goes both ways.
How to apply
Send your CV and a short note to [email protected]. Rather than a covering letter, tell us about a time you went further for a patient than you strictly had to, and what happened. Then tell us in a line or two where you would like to be in three years.
We read those properly, and they count for more than the CV.
Pay: £35.00-£38.00 per hour
Expected hours: 10.0 – 25.0 per week
