Purpose:
The Operations Manager will manage day-to-day warehouse operations at Banbury, with a core focus on receiving component parts, completing inbound inspection, controlling inventory, picking parts into sub-assembly kits and overseeing the process to transport goods from Banbury to the production warehouse.
The postholder will be accountable for warehouse performance, resource planning, inventory accuracy, compliance, people leadership and continuous improvement, ensuring a safe, secure and controlled operation that meets customer requirements, contractual service levels and production or operational schedules.
Main Duties & Responsibilities:
Operational Leadership
- Manage daily warehouse operations across goods in, inbound inspection, put-away, storage, stock control, picking, kitting, dispatch and related activities.
- Plan, organise and prioritise activity to meet customer requirements and operational deadlines.
- Monitor performance against agreed warehouse KPIs and service levels, taking corrective action where required.
- Ensure processes, work instructions and standard operating procedures are followed consistently.
- Promote strong operational discipline, high standards of housekeeping and a culture of accountability.
People Management
- Lead, motivate and develop warehouse supervisors, team leaders and operational colleagues.
- Manage labour planning, shift cover, attendance, utilisation and performance in line with business requirements.
- Support recruitment, onboarding, training and competency development for warehouse personnel.
- Conduct regular performance conversations and support colleague development plans.
- Build a positive, safe and customer-focused culture that supports teamwork and continuous improvement.
Inventory and Stock Control
- Ensure high levels of inventory accuracy through effective stock control, cycle counting and audit processes.
- Investigate and resolve stock discrepancies, process errors and inventory exceptions.
- Ensure inventory movements are accurately recorded in warehouse and business systems.
- Maintain effective traceability and control of customer-owned, contract-specific and operationally critical stock.
- Work with planning, procurement, customer service and operational stakeholders to support material availability.
Warehouse Service Delivery
- Ensure component parts are received, inspected, controlled and picked accurately into sub-assembly kits for shipment to the production facility.
- Oversee workload balancing across warehouse functions to maintain service delivery and productivity.
- Support readiness for changes in customer demand, volume, priorities or production schedules.
- Investigate service failures, quality issues or operational delays and implement corrective actions.
- Own and coordinate the transport process for goods moving from Banbury to the production warehouse, ensuring dispatch readiness, documentation accuracy, timely handover and alignment with production requirements.
- Support customer and internal reviews with performance updates and improvement actions.
Health, Safety, Security and Compliance
- Ensure warehouse activity is carried out safely and in line with company health, safety, environmental and operational standards.
- Promote a safety-first culture, encouraging near-miss reporting and proactive hazard identification.
- Ensure colleagues comply with site security, access control and customer confidentiality requirements.
- Support internal and external audits, inspections and compliance reviews.
- Ensure accidents, incidents and operational non-conformances are investigated and corrective actions completed.
Continuous Improvement and Cost Control
- Identify and implement improvements to warehouse efficiency, accuracy, productivity and cost effectiveness.
- Use operational data to identify trends, root causes and improvement opportunities.
- Support Lean, 5S and other continuous improvement initiatives within the warehouse.
- Manage resources efficiently and support delivery of labour productivity and budget expectations.
- Share good practice and support wider operational improvement where appropriate.
Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications and Experience:
Essential
- Proven experience managing warehouse operations in logistics, supply chain, manufacturing, distribution or a similar environment.
- Experience leading warehouse teams through supervisors, team leaders or first-line managers.
- Strong knowledge of warehouse processes including goods in, inbound inspection, storage, stock control, picking, kitting and dispatch.
- Strong inventory control experience, including cycle counting, discrepancy investigation and stock accuracy improvement.
- Experience using warehouse management or similar systems to manage transactions, performance and inventory records.
- Ability to manage operational KPIs, analyse performance and implement corrective or improvement actions.
- Good working knowledge of health, safety and operational compliance in a warehouse environment.
- Effective communication and stakeholder management skills across internal teams, customers and operational partners.
- Experience coordinating transport, dispatch or material movement processes between warehouse and production or customer sites.
- Ability to obtain and maintain Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) clearance for the duration of employment. Candidates do not need BPSS clearance at application stage; appointment will be subject to completing the required checks in line with customer, contractual and legal requirements.
Desirable
- Experience in a regulated, secure, defence, aerospace, engineering or manufacturing support environment.
- Experience supporting kitting, production supply, material staging or line-side activity.
- Experience mobilising or scaling a warehouse operation, new contract or customer activity.
- IOSH Managing Safely or equivalent health and safety qualification.
- Lean, Six Sigma, 5S, CILT, ILM or other relevant operational, logistics or leadership qualification.
