Maintenance Operative
Salary: £10,519 per annum
Hours: 15 hours per week, worked flexibly

About the Role
St Kentigern Hospice is looking for a practical, reliable and proactive Maintenance Operative to help maintain our hospice and charity shop premises to the highest standards.
This is a rewarding opportunity to play an important role in supporting our patients, families, staff, volunteers and visitors by ensuring our buildings and grounds remain safe, welcoming and well maintained. Working alongside our existing Maintenance Operative, you will share responsibility for planned and reactive maintenance across the hospice and charity shops, providing cover through a rota system.

Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will:
- Carry out general building maintenance and repairs across the hospice and charity shops.
- Maintain the appearance and safety of internal and external areas, including gardens, pathways and grounds.
- Undertake routine inspections of the buildings, identifying maintenance requirements and carrying out repairs where appropriate.
- Respond promptly to maintenance requests from staff and prioritise work effectively.
- Identify hazards, defects and maintenance issues, ensuring compliance with Health & Safety legislation and hospice policies.
- Coordinate repairs and annual servicing with approved contractors.
- Act as the emergency maintenance contact when required.
- Carry out general plumbing repairs, including replacing taps, washers and clearing blocked toilets.
- Complete basic carpentry tasks such as changing locks, repairing doors and replacing handles.
- Undertake painting and decorating to maintain a high standard throughout the premises.
- Perform basic electrical maintenance, including replacing light fittings, bulbs and fuses (within competence).
- Complete monthly inspections of electrical fuse panels.
- Carry out monthly checks of fire extinguishers and emergency lighting, maintaining accurate records for compliance purposes.
- Assist with fire safety procedures, including evacuation testing.
- Ensure equipment is safe for use and support the management of Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) records.
- Work closely with colleagues and external contractors to ensure maintenance work is completed efficiently and with minimal disruption.
- Carry out any other reasonable duties requested by the Hospice Manager that are consistent with the role.
What We're Looking For
Essential
- Proven experience in a broad maintenance or facilities role.
- Practical skills across several trades, including general building maintenance.
- Experience of basic plumbing, carpentry and general repairs.
- Good knowledge of Health & Safety practices.
- Ability to work independently and manage a varied workload.
- Strong organisational and time management skills.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to use a range of hand and power tools safely.
- Physical fitness appropriate for manual maintenance work.
Desirable
- Previous experience working within a healthcare, hospice or care environment.
- Basic knowledge of electrical maintenance.
- Experience of working with contractors and planned maintenance schedules.
- PAT Testing qualification or willingness to undertake training.
- Full UK driving licence.
