Department Overview – Networks and Hosting
The IT Networks and Hosting team, within TP&O are responsible for Microsoft (including Windows, Azure and SQL), AWS, Oracle and LINUX technologies managing and maintaining TfL’s core infrastructure at a virtual and physical layer.
The core servers we use includes Hyper Converged Infrastructure and full Windows Environments, hosting over 400 of TfL’s Mission Critical and Business Critical services including The Elizabeth Line, London Underground, Overground, Buses and Oyster/Contactless which ultimately keep TfL services running .
The Team (Wintel Platform)
The Wintel platform team is made up of approximately 20 Windows IT Infrastructure platform specialists, working together across multiple workstreams including day to day operational activities and Project Delivery.
About the Role
As a senior technical specialist, you will play a key role in maintaining and evolving our infrastructure platforms, leading major incident resolution, driving automation initiatives, supporting strategic projects, and providing expert guidance across the organisation.
You will work independently, making informed technical decisions and/or recommendations that support operational excellence while contributing to the future direction of infrastructure services.
This is a critical technical lead role responsible for ensuring the health, performance, security, and resilience of enterprise infrastructure services across a complex and large-scale environment.
Key Duties:
Ensure the operational health, availability, performance, and resilience of infrastructure services.
Lead and support incident resolution, problem management, service requests, and change activities in line with IT Service Management best practices.
Deliver proactive lifecycle management and continuous service improvement initiatives.
Drive cyber security vulnerability remediation within your technical area.
Contribute to the design and assurance of complex infrastructure solutions and architecture.
Lead root cause analysis activities for major incidents and recurring technical issues.
Provide technical leadership on infrastructure projects and strategic workstreams.
Assess technical risks and provide recommendations on significant technology changes
Champion Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) and automation initiatives to improve efficiency, consistency, and service quality.
Evaluate emerging technologies and contribute to infrastructure roadmaps and standards
Collaborate with architects, product managers, service operations teams, cyber security specialists, vendors, and business stakeholders.
Communicate complex technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
Mentor and coach engineers, acting as a technical leader within the team.
Essential Experience
Proven experience as an IT Senior Infrastructure Engineer, Lead Engineer, or Technical Architect.
Extensive experience implementing, supporting, and managing infrastructure within large-scale enterprise environments (2,000+ servers), including physical, virtual, and cloud platforms.
Strong operational experience balancing service restoration priorities with technical excellence.
Experience working with senior stakeholders and delivering business value through technology services.
Demonstrable experience delivering customer-focused IT services.
Technical Knowledge
Deep technical expertise in enterprise infrastructure technologies, networks, hosting platforms, and cloud services.
Strong understanding of infrastructure architecture, service resilience, and enterprise technology standards.
Knowledge of modern automation frameworks, Infrastructure-as-Code, and operational best practices.
Understanding of cyber security principles and vulnerability management.

Excellent communication and stakeholder management abilities.
Skilled in risk assessment and decision-making.
