Our Data & Analytics team creates value for Morrisons by making sure we have the right data in the right place, providing access to data and insight through reporting tools (e.g. Looker) and providing the capability to answer strategic questions using Analytics and Data Science. As part of a fast paced retail environment, our data scientists work closely with both our wider data and analytics team and cross functionally across the organisation to help solve business problems, improve our performance and create value from our data.
Accountabilities
The role will have the following accountabilities:
Customer
Build trusted relationships with customers across all internal functions
Demonstrate an excellent understanding of business process and context
Solve complex business problems, using data & mathematical modelling
Own the customer relationship to the point of delivery providing regular updates on progress to customer and senior stakeholder groups
Where needed to aid clarity, develop agile proof of concepts to showcase possible solutions

Champion data literacy across the organisation
Embody a “quick turn around” culture for any small requests that add value and enable data products to be shipped within one working days effort
Demonstrate a culture that enables value driven data product creation

Operational
Data and basic modelling tasks including:
Building feature sets for modelling tasks
Productionising machine learning models in the cloud
Building machine learning models such as forecasting sales and waste across the estate
Use our state-of-the-art data facilities in GCP to extract, transform and load data (ETL) for the data science team

As a Data Science Specialist, you will have experience of:

Key Skills
Excellent SQL skills and the ability to extract data from data marts in an accurate and efficient manner.
Experience of programming - preferably in Python or R - but any kind of programming experience e.g. Javascript, VBA, Java is acceptable.
Creating data visualisations and possessing an understanding of how to display data in an effective and engaging way and tell stories with the data.
The ability to mentor other members of the team - in particular technical concepts such as programming, whilst also being eager and enthusiastic about learning new skills from more experienced members of the team
Desirable:
Experience using visualisation software and dashboards - preferably Looker or Looker Studio.
Knowledge of descriptive statistics - the ability to analyse and describe data e.g. univariate analysis to describe the distribution of data in terms of central tendency (mean, median, mode), dispersion (range, quartiles, variance, standard deviation) and characteristics of the distribution such as skewness.
A background in maths, physics or engineering
Basic modelling - understanding of the fundamentals of simple statistical models such as linear and logistic regression.
Workable knowledge of cloud computing resources (GCP, AWS,or Azure).
Causal inference - the ability and understanding to analyse data in such a way that only the intended effect is measured [e.g if waste is going down in store in general but there’s a trial to improve waste, how do you understand what would’ve happened if no intervention was made so that the true benefit can be measured]
Experience of working within a FMCG environment, manufacturing or logistics environment
