Job Overview

Links Nurseries Ltd is a private limited company which runs a well respected group of three nurseries in Edinburgh, East Lothian, and Aberdeenshire. We provide flexible, high quality childcare and learning for children aged 0 to 5 years.

We are seeking a dedicated and passionate Early Years Forest School Lead Practitioner to join our team at our Edinburgh nursery, City & Little City Nursery, located in the leafy and quiet suburb of Greenbank EH10 near Morningside, Edinburgh, on a part-time basis. Ideally you will work 3 days a week with a 7.30 am or 8 am start and a 5pm or 6 pm finish, which would be 27 to 30 hours per week. If full time hours are important for you, we can offer an additional day in an ordinary Practitioner role to make a 40 hour full time contract for you.

This role offers an exciting opportunity to inspire young children through outdoor learning and play in a natural environment. The successful candidate will be responsible for planning and delivering daily, engaging forest school outings and experiences, fostering children’s development, and ensuring a safe, nurturing atmosphere that promotes curiosity and exploration. Also important is the observation and evaluation of children’s development, including leading on forest school floor books etc.

Main Duties include:

Lead and facilitate outdoor learning sessions in the forest school setting, encouraging children’s independence, creativity, and environmental awareness
Plan and deliver age-appropriate activities that support developmental milestones and promote holistic growth
Ensure the safety of all children during outdoor activities by conducting risk assessments and maintaining supervision at all times
Foster positive relationships with children, parents, and colleagues to create a welcoming and inclusive environment
Observe, evaluate and record children’s progress and development including updating floor books and other records
Organise resources and equipment needed for outdoor sessions, ensuring they are well-maintained and suitable for use.

Essential requirements for this post:

Candidates should be qualified nursery practitioners, either holding, or nearing completion of studies for, a relevant Scottish childcare qualification at HNC level/SCQF level 7/SVQ level 3 or equivalent which will allow them to register with the SSSC at practitioner level without a condition. Please refer to the SSSC website for qualifications which might be acceptable.
Candidates should be forest school trained or qualified and/or have significant forest school experience with nursery age children.

Candidates should also have a sound knowledge of children's development and a working knowledge of relevant curricula and early years best practice. Experience of working with children in a nursery, afterschool club or as a registered childminder etc. is also essential.
