About the Role

We are looking for an ambitious AI & Software Engineer to join our team and play a key role in building the technology infrastructure that enables our AI-powered battery energy storage systems (BESS) to connect, communicate and interact intelligently with the electricity grid.

This is a highly hands-on role at the intersection of AI, software engineering, energy technology, IoT and grid infrastructure. You will be responsible for developing the software platforms, APIs, control systems and data infrastructure required to monitor, optimise and coordinate our batteries in real time.

The ideal candidate will be excited by the opportunity to build technology from the ground up and work on a product that sits at the heart of the transition towards a smarter, more flexible energy system.

Key Responsibilities

Grid & Battery Infrastructure

Design and develop software infrastructure connecting our battery systems to the electricity grid.
Develop communication layers between batteries, inverters, meters, energy management systems and cloud platforms.
Build systems capable of securely receiving and transmitting real-time energy and grid data.
Develop interfaces and APIs for communication with external energy companies, aggregators, network operators and energy markets.
Help develop systems capable of controlling battery charging, discharging and power output in response to grid conditions.

AI & Optimisation

Develop AI/ML-driven systems to optimise battery charging and discharging.
Build algorithms that analyse electricity prices, grid demand, battery state and other market data to determine optimal battery behaviour.
Develop forecasting models for energy demand, electricity prices and renewable generation.
Continuously improve battery performance through data-driven optimisation.
Explore opportunities to use AI for predictive maintenance, fault detection and battery degradation modelling.

Software Engineering

Design and build scalable backend infrastructure for our battery fleet.
Develop APIs and microservices to connect hardware, software and external platforms.
Build real-time data pipelines for battery and grid telemetry.
Develop dashboards and monitoring tools to track battery performance and system health.
Implement automated testing, monitoring, logging and deployment processes.
Work with cloud infrastructure to ensure systems are reliable, scalable and secure.

IoT & Real-Time Systems

Work with IoT technologies to connect physical battery assets to our software platform.
Develop secure device communication and remote-control functionality.
Process high-frequency telemetry from distributed battery systems.
Design systems capable of operating reliably in real-time environments.
Troubleshoot connectivity, communication and hardware/software integration issues.

Security & Reliability

Implement strong cybersecurity practices across connected battery infrastructure.
Ensure communications between batteries, cloud infrastructure and third parties are secure.
Design systems with appropriate redundancy, monitoring and fail-safe mechanisms.
Ensure software meets relevant energy-sector, cybersecurity and grid-connection requirements.

Required Experience & Skills

Strong software engineering background, ideally with experience in Python, Java, C++, JavaScript/TypeScript or similar languages.
Experience developing APIs, backend systems and cloud-based applications.
Strong understanding of databases, data pipelines and distributed systems.
Experience working with REST APIs, MQTT, WebSockets or other communication protocols.
Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure or Google Cloud.
Strong understanding of software architecture and system design.
Experience working with real-time data or IoT systems.
Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
Ability to work independently and take ownership of technical projects.

Desirable Experience

Experience in any of the following would be highly advantageous:

Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS)
Energy Management Systems (EMS)
Electricity grids and grid balancing
Renewable energy
Energy trading or flexibility markets
Demand response
Virtual Power Plants (VPPs)
IoT and connected hardware

Energy APIs or electricity market data
Cybersecurity for connected infrastructure
Kubernetes, Docker and CI/CD

What You'll Build

You will have the opportunity to help build a platform that can ultimately allow hundreds or thousands of batteries to operate as an intelligent, coordinated energy network.

The technology you develop could enable our batteries to:

Automatically charge when electricity is cheap or renewable energy is abundant.
Discharge when grid demand is high.
Respond to grid signals in real time.
Participate in energy and flexibility markets.
Optimise revenue across multiple energy markets.
Predict and prevent battery faults.
Learn from historical battery and grid behaviour.
Operate as part of a Virtual Power Plant (VPP).

The Ideal Candidate
