Job Summary
About the Role
We are seeking a collaborative and capable Ruby Developer to join a large-scale UK government agency. You will be a key contributor within a blended agile delivery squad made up of civil servants and multi-supplier staff, dedicated to building accessible, user-centred digital services. The systems you will help build and maintain are critical to the UK's infrastructure, processing over 99.4 million customer transactions annually and handling nearly 5 billion digital interactions.
Operating at SFIA Level 3 (aligning with the Government Digital and Data "Working" skill level), you will apply modern development standards and write clean, maintainable code with guidance and support from senior engineers. In this role, you will focus on developing front-end applications using Ruby on Rails, integrating them with an API-first ecosystem powered by Java Spring Boot and AWS serverless backend technologies. You will work closely with other developers, testers, and product managers to iteratively deliver value and continuously improve the customer experience.
Key Responsibilities
Software Development: Develop, test, and maintain responsive, user-centred web applications using Ruby on Rails, applying established engineering and modern development standards.
API Integration: Work with the team to successfully integrate front-end user interfaces with backend RESTful microservices (Java Spring Boot) and AWS serverless components (such as Lambda and API Gateway).
Quality & Automation: Write automated tests (TDD/BDD) and support the integration of your code into continuous integration and continuous deployment (CI/CD) pipelines to ensure high-quality and reliable releases.
Accessibility & Security: Ensure that all user interfaces meet strict WCAG 2.2 accessibility guidelines and adhere to secure-by-design principles.
Agile Delivery: Actively participate in core agile ceremonies (stand-ups, sprint planning, retrospectives) within a blended, multidisciplinary squad, collaborating with Business Analysts, Product Owners, and Agile Delivery Managers.
Service Standards: Assist the team in gathering evidence and documenting features to ensure digital services successfully pass formal government service assessments across discovery, alpha, private beta, and live phases.
Continuous Learning: Troubleshoot issues, resolve technical blockers with support from senior colleagues, and continuously expand your knowledge of the strategic tech stack and public sector delivery frameworks.
Essential Skills & Experience
Frontend Engineering: Proven commercial experience developing robust web applications using Ruby on Rails, HTML5, and CSS3.
API Integration: Practical experience interacting with and integrating RESTful APIs and microservices within a modern web architecture.
Inclusive Design: A strong understanding of web accessibility principles and practical experience developing interfaces that comply with WCAG 2.2 standards.
Quality Assurance: Experience writing unit and integration tests using modern automated testing frameworks (e.g., RSpec, Capybara).
Agile Collaboration: Experience working effectively within multidisciplinary agile teams (such as Scrum or Kanban) and using collaboration tooling like Jira and Confluence.
Version Control & CI/CD: Proficiency with Git version control and an understanding of how front-end code integrates into CI/CD pipelines.
Desirable Skills & Experience
Frontend JavaScript: Familiarity with React.js, which is used alongside Ruby on Rails within the agency's broader front-end stack.
Public Sector Context: Awareness of the Government Digital and Data (GDD) Service Standard and the Technology Code of Practice.
Cloud Platforms: Familiarity with deploying and operating frontend applications within a cloud-hosted environment, particularly AWS.
Cross-Government Integration: Basic knowledge or awareness of strategic cross-government platforms (such as GOV.UK One Login, GOV.UK Pay, or GOV.UK Notify).
Legacy Tech Familiarity: Exposure to or understanding of legacy migration patterns (e.g., moving services away from mainframe, Java, AIX, Oracle, Natural, and Adabas).
Our interview process
We keep things straightforward. Following an initial CV review, successful candidates will be invited to a short screening call with our recruitment team, followed by a two-stage process comprising a technical assessment and a values-based interview with the hiring team. We aim to move quickly and will keep you informed at every stage.
