DEPARTMENT: Mobile Playback Engineering
LOCATION: Salford - Hybrid
PROPOSED SALARY RANGE: up to £38,200 depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights.

PURPOSE OF THE ROLE
Mobile Playback Engineering, part of Media Services, is an integral part of the BBC's digital‑first strategy, delivering consistent user experiences and core functionality across the BBC's mobile estate. As a Junior Software Engineer within Mobile Playback you’ll be joining a team of engineers developing our Media Player components - the core playback engine of all video and audio content across the BBC online.

YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT
Developing software - for the download, playback and decryption of media for the whole of the BBC mobile estate.
Writing software collaboratively - work closely with other team members through pair programming, code review and continuous delivery.
Working across platforms - happy to work on both Android and iOS codebases
Writing clean code - enthusiasm for writing clean, well documented, and testable code.
Improving ways of working - the ability to question the way we work, and the tools and processes we use.
Communicating effectively - able to talk to developers, non‑developers, and communicate remotely across multiple BBC sites.
Embracing change - curious and embraces change; requirements often change and you’ll enjoy this challenge.
Finishing with detail - goal orientated and enjoys finishing the job by developing the final details.
YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
ESSENTIAL CRITERIA
Swift or Objective C.
Kotlin or Java.
Software testing practices and frameworks.
System administration eg Linux
Test Driven Development
