Specialty Doctor in Anaesthetics: An exciting opportunity has arisen for a motivated doctor to join our talented and hardworking team at Epsom & St Helier. The post will require right to work in UK and current GMC registration. The post will be substantive with 10 PAs and the opportunity to increase to 12 PAs. The post holder will be required to work a 1:8 on call at either Epsom or St Helier Hospital.

Main duties of the job

Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust provides a range of medical services to approximately 420,000 people living across southwest London and northeast Surrey. In addition, we provide more specialist services for renal and neonatal intensive care to a wider area covering parts of Sussex and Hampshire.

The Epsom & St Helier Anaesthetic department is aligned with the St George's Hospital teaching programme for medical students and the SW Thames School of Anaesthesia training programme. We score highly each year in the national hip fracture database report and are one of the busiest 5 units in London. Our National Emergency Laparotomy Audit (NELA) pathway and patient outcomes score as excellent.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Duties

The post holder will be required to work a 1:8 on call at St Helier Hospital or Epsom Hospital

The SD will be supported at all times by the Consultants and be expected to supervise the junior anaesthetists.This role encompasses cross site working. Assessment, care and treatment of patients presenting acutely to the specialty and referred to the specialty.

Teaching and training staff in other medical disciplines, nursing and support staff as appropriate.

Communication with other team members as appropriate.

Participation in relevant audit and quality assurance processes.

Abide by the Clinical & Corporate Governance policies of the Trust.To make sure that the guidance from the General Medical Council on

Good Medical Practice is at the centre of your clinical practice.

To keep up to date in Anaesthetics knowledge by Continuous Medical Education in the best interest of the patient.

Although a timetable will be provided, you will be expected to be flexible, in the interests of patient care and to meet the needs of the department as decided by the general manager and coordinating surgeon.

To contribute to the wider corporate and organisational needs of the Trust as appropriate.

Qualifications and Training

Essential criteria

MBBS or equivalent
Registration with GMC

Desirable criteria

Primary FRCA or equivalent
Recognised RCoA approved anaesthetic qualification

Experience

Essential criteria

Minimum 5 years’ experience in anaesthetics (international experience considered
Provider or instructor in ATLS, APLS, ALS or similar

Desirable criteria

UK Core training completed (or equivalent experience
3 months independent experience in obstetric anaesthesia
IAC/IACOA completed

Non Clinical Skills

Essential criteria

Good interpersonal and leadership skills
Ability to work within a clinical team

Teaching, research and Clinical Governance

Essential criteria

Understanding of clinical governance and participation in audit
Current successful appraisal and revalidation
Experience of teaching undergraduates
Presentations at postgraduate meetings

Desirable criteria

Evidence of research and/or publications
Evidence of audit projects
Ability to teach junior staff
