Senior Data Engineer
We are seeking an experienced Senior Data Engineer to join our growing data and technology team in Nottingham. This is an excellent opportunity for a technically strong data professional to design, build, and optimize reliable data platforms that support business intelligence, analytics, reporting, and strategic decision making.
You will work closely with data analysts, data scientists, software engineers, cloud specialists, and business stakeholders to develop scalable data pipelines and modern data solutions. You will also contribute to data architecture, platform reliability, automation, security, and continuous improvement across the organization's data environment.
The ideal candidate will have strong hands on experience with SQL, Python, cloud technologies, data pipelines, and modern data engineering platforms, combined with the ability to solve complex technical problems and support less experienced engineers.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and maintain scalable data pipelines for analytics, reporting, and operational systems.
- Build reliable ETL and ELT processes that integrate data from multiple structured and unstructured sources.
- Develop and maintain data warehouses, data lakes, and modern cloud based data platforms.
- Work closely with analysts, data scientists, and business stakeholders to understand data requirements and deliver effective solutions.
- Develop efficient data models that support reporting, analytics, and business intelligence requirements.
- Write, optimize, and maintain complex SQL queries for large scale data processing.
- Develop data engineering solutions using Python, Spark, or other suitable programming technologies.
- Build automated data workflows using tools such as Apache Airflow, Azure Data Factory, AWS Glue, or similar platforms.
- Monitor data pipelines and investigate failures, performance issues, and data quality problems.
- Implement data validation, quality checks, monitoring, and error handling processes.
- Support cloud data environments using Microsoft Azure, Amazon Web Services, or Google Cloud Platform.
- Implement appropriate security, access control, backup, and data protection measures.
- Maintain technical documentation covering data pipelines, models, processes, and architecture.
- Mentor junior data engineers and promote consistent engineering standards and best practices.
- Evaluate new technologies and identify opportunities to improve data platform performance, reliability, scalability, and cost efficiency.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Data Engineering, Information Technology, Mathematics, Engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent professional experience.
- Significant professional experience in data engineering, data platform development, or a closely related technical role.
- Advanced SQL skills with experience working with large relational databases and data warehouses.
- Strong programming experience in Python, Scala, Java, or a similar language.
- Hands on experience developing ETL and ELT pipelines.
- Experience with cloud platforms such as Microsoft Azure, Amazon Web Services, or Google Cloud Platform.
- Experience with data engineering technologies such as Apache Spark, Databricks, Kafka, Airflow, Azure Data Factory, or AWS Glue.
- Strong understanding of data warehousing, dimensional modelling, data lakes, data integration, and data lifecycle management.
- Experience with databases such as SQL Server, PostgreSQL, MySQL, Oracle, Snowflake, BigQuery, or similar technologies.
- Experience using Git and modern software development practices.
- Understanding of CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and deployment processes.
- Knowledge of data governance, data security, GDPR, access management, and data quality practices.
- Strong analytical and problem solving skills with excellent attention to detail.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively with technical and non technical stakeholders.
- Experience mentoring junior engineers or taking technical ownership of projects is desirable.
- Relevant cloud or data engineering certifications are advantageous.
- Eligibility to work in the United Kingdom.
