Who is QuickSMS?
We are a messaging company that works with UK businesses to connect with their customers. The platform delivers over 100m messages per month on behalf of a wide range of organisations including the NHS, large blue-chip companies and SMBs.
We are a small team of seven people, based all over the UK. We meet as a team once a month to socialise as a group.
What is the role?
You will work directly with our Director of Engineering, who has over 25 years' experience in building software. You will work across front-end and back-end systems, be involved in deployments and build integrations into platforms like HubSpot and Shopify.
You will be in the Sheffield office with him 3 days a week for at least the first 6 months. You will receive technical mentoring and regular code reviews as you develop.
You will interact with customers and our management and sales teams at QuickSMS. Our core stack is Laravel/PHP, PostgreSQL and GitHub, hosted within our Rackspace environment.
You will be building APIs, customer-facing features, integrations, internal tooling, messaging infrastructure, RCS, reporting etc. You will aslo need to act as a line of support to our customers on technical quieres.
We actively use tools including Claude, Gemini and GPT as part of our development workflow. We aren't looking for someone who can simply prompt an AI to produce code. We want someone who understands what the code does, can test and challenge its output, identify security and performance issues, and turn AI-generated code into reliable production software.
Who are we looking for?
You have good programming fundamentals, an understanding of databases/SQL and basic web/API knowledge. You have the ability to debug rather than immediately give up, curiosity, good communication skills, evidence that you've actually built something, and a willingness to learn.
We don't expect you to know everything or have years of commercial experience. We do expect you to understand the fundamentals, have built things yourself, and be able to explain why you've built them the way you have.
We're a small, growing business, so you won't spend your first year watching from the sidelines. You'll be writing production code, joining technical discussions, working directly with customers and helping shape products that generate real revenue. Priorities can sometimes change quickly, so you'll need to be comfortable adapting and taking ownership.
We have a planned 12-month roadmap, but you must be agile in accepting new projects and workloads that give the company a pathway to new revenue.
You must want to learn about RCS and get involved in developer communities. It's our big bet, it's paying off, and we want you along for the ride.
We want someone who wants to be with the company and grow with us long term, but you have to be willing to put the work in.
We want someone who is willing to back their ability, learn and be inquisitive, and over time be prepared to challenge us and make us better as a business.

There is an expectation that you live in the local area, or can viably commute to the Sheffield office.

What have we missed that's important to a graduate?
I am not looking for you to rewrite the Job Advert. The tone of voice and structure need to stay the same. If you can identify any grammar issues or areas which aren't easy to follow, make a suggested change.
