Job Summary

Brighton College is seeking to appoint Performing Arts Production Assistants - Design and Wardrobe on a Zero-hour basis.

Reporting to: Head of Technical and Production

Main purpose of the role:

This role supports the delivery of Brighton College's extensive Performing Arts programme, productions, events and examinations.

Working as part of the wider Production and Design Team, the postholder will provide practical support across scenic construction, prop management, costume preparation, wardrobe operations, event delivery and production activities. The role will assist both the Head of Theatrical Design and Head of Wardrobe Design in ensuring the highest standards of presentation, organisation and operational delivery across all productions and events.

This is a flexible casual position with hours allocated according to the operational needs of productions, projects and events throughout the academic year.

General Duties and Responsibilities:

Production Support

Support the delivery of productions, performances, examinations and events across the College.
Assist with the preparation, installation, operation and strike of productions and events.
Support scenic construction, set dressing, prop making and prop sourcing activities as required.
Assist with the preparation and management of rehearsal and performance spaces.
Provide practical backstage support during productions and events.
Attend production meetings as required and contribute to the effective delivery of projects.

Scenic and Prop Support

Support the sourcing, creation, preparation and maintenance of props for productions and events.
Assist in maintaining organised and accessible scenery and prop stores.
Assist with the transportation and movement of production equipment and materials across campus.

Wardrobe and Costume Support

Support the Head of Wardrobe Design with costume preparation, maintenance and organisation.
Assist with costume fittings, alterations and preparation for performances.
Support the laundering, repair and storage of costume stock.
Help maintain costume stores and ensure stock remains organised and accessible.
Assist with costume tracking systems and inventory management.
Act as a dresser during productions when required.
Support the sourcing of costume items and accessories as directed.

Operational Support

Work across multiple productions and projects simultaneously, delivering agreed tasks within required deadlines.
Support the preparation and maintenance of production-related facilities, workshops and storage areas.
Assist with departmental administrative tasks associated with productions, stock control and project delivery.
Contribute to maintaining high standards of presentation and organisation in all areas under the department's control.
Support wider Performing Arts and College events as required.

General

Undertake such other duties as may reasonably be required by the Head of Production, Head of Theatrical Design or Head of Wardrobe Design, commensurate with the nature and grade of the role.
Support the wider Brighton College family of schools where appropriate and agreed.
Maintain the highest standards of professionalism, reliability and customer service at all times.

Person Specification:

The successful candidate will have experience in the following areas:

Organised and dependable, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines in a busy production environment.
Practical and hands-on, with an interest in theatre production, scenery, props, costume, and backstage operations.
A strong team player, able to work effectively with staff, students and visiting creatives while maintaining a professional attitude.
Adaptable and proactive, willing to support a wide range of productions, events and departmental activities as required.
Committed to high standards, demonstrating attention to detail, excellent organisational skills, and a commitment to safeguarding, health and safety, and customer service.

Hours of Work:

This is an all-year round (52 weeks) appointment on a zero-hour basis. The services you provide to the College will be on an ad-hoc basis. This means that whilst the College will try to give you as much notice as possible when offering work, there is no obligation on the part of the College to provide such work nor for you to accept any work offered.

Further discussions will take place at interview regarding availability of ad-hoc hours.

Remuneration:

£16.26 per hour, inclusive of holiday pay.

Holidays:

Holiday entitlement is included in the hourly pay rate for this role.
