Full job description

Salary: £35k to £45k dependent upon skills and experience. No agencies please.

We are looking for developers who are experienced with and enthusiastic about PHP to join our Chichester team.

There are many skills and technologies that would be useful, but to be a great fit for this role, you should have experience spending the majority of your time knee deep in object-oriented, modern PHP.

As a D3R developer, you'll also need excellent communication skills and solid commercial understanding. We don't have a traditional project management layer so these skills are vital, both with clients and the rest of the team.

On the technical side, you should have the following skills:

You feel at home in modern PHP 8 and are experienced using object-oriented principles to solve complex problems.
You think and care about code reuse and abstraction and are always looking for ways to increase the leverage of the code you write.
You have experience with at least one PHP framework or have worked with a large, complex application.
You care about code quality and have put this into practice by testing with PHPUnit or static analysers, ideally setting up continuous integration tooling to automate this.
You're not scared of being a bit of a detective - this could mean jumping into code and following a bug around but also working something out with your colleagues when two heads are better than one.
You have a track record of getting things done and focussing on delivery. You are good at predicting how long a piece of work is likely to take and recognising potential risks ahead of time.

There are lots of other skills we like our devs to have and for this role we would expect candidates to be able to demonstrate experience in a number of the following areas:

AI and agentic coding skills. Ideally you've done enough of this to know which things AI does well, which it does badly, and how to make good decisions about when you take over to ensure that you are gaining a genuine productivity boost.
Front end skills. Many of our developers are full-stack with strong HTML, CSS (or SASS) and JavaScript skills. This allows them to take on more of a project with greater ownership and responsibility.
Ecommerce and integrations with payment gateways. If you've been involved with PCI compliance that would be even better.
Web performance. How to measure it, how to improve it, and what value that might bring a client.
A deep understanding of SQL (we use MariaDB). How to write complex queries, optimise performance, and design scalable database schema.
Sysadmin and DevOps. We use AWS and CloudFlare along with Debian, Puppet, and Terraform. We are always on the lookout for careful, experienced heads to help us manage and improve our infrastructure.
Analytics and tracking. How to build robust measurement setups with Google Tag Manager web (and server) containers and an understanding of consent and cookie management in a changing ecosystem.

Note that this is an in-office role - with the possibility to work some days from home in a hybrid pattern once you've settled into our team. As such, you need to be prepared to relocate or regularly commute to the office every week in order to be successful in this role.
