About the Role

Civia is looking for an Assistant Engineer to support our work with local authorities.

The role will mainly involve assisting with Highway Development Control, grant-funded highway projects, and Sustainable Drainage Approval Body work. This primarily involves supporting consulting engineering services for councils to review development proposals, manage highway and infrastructure schemes, correspond with stakeholders, and to understand, work to, and apply legislation.

Please note that this is not a Civil Engineering Designer / CAD technician role.

About Civia

Civia is a small consulting civil engineering company established in 2020. We provide two main services: a Design Studio for developer clients, where we design highway and drainage solutions; and a Consulting Engineer service for council clients, where we work as part of their team to help deliver highways and environment services.

You will be part of a close team where your contribution matters and where the work you do helps build the business, its reputation, and the quality of service we provide to our clients.

About You

This is an entry-level role. Previous experience is not required.

We are looking for someone who is willing to learn, adaptable, technically minded, and able to work carefully across a large number of live projects. You will need to have an eye for detail, be organised, IT-literate, and able to write clearly and professionally.

The successful applicant will also need to be comfortable taking enquiries by phone, joining discussions in meetings, asking questions, and learning as they go.

The role would suit someone with an interest in civil engineering, highways, drainage, construction, planning, project management or local government, but a formal qualification is not essential.

A driving licence is not required for this application. However, the role is expected to involve site visits across England and Wales in the future, so the ability to drive would become essential as your duties develop.

Qualifications and Academic Ability

The successful applicant will need to learn quickly, deal with technical information, manage a large number of live matters, and develop towards supporting local authority clients with increasing independence.

Applicants should have GCSE English and Maths at grade 4/C or above, or equivalent qualifications.

Strong grades or qualifications in English, maths, science, geography, engineering, construction, IT or similar subjects would be beneficial, particularly where the applicant is applying directly from school or college.

What the Work Involves

The work will be varied. Typical duties will include:

Assisting with the review of planning applications, drawings, and technical documents.
Helping manage project actions, records, and correspondence.
Supporting grant-funded highway and infrastructure schemes.
Assisting with SAB and drainage-related work.
Preparing notes, letters, and simple reports.
Attending Teams meetings with councils, developers, consultants, and contractors.
Keeping track of actions and helping move matters forward.
On-the-job learning with 1-2-1 training and reading material.
Taking on more responsibility as your knowledge develops.

IT Skills

You should be comfortable using computers, email, and Microsoft Office.

Experience with spreadsheets, mapping software or drawing software would be useful, but is not essential.

Development

This is a development role. You will work directly with an experienced Engineer and be supported as you become more comfortable with your duties.

The aim is to train the right person into a capable Assistant Engineer who can support our local authority clients, deal professionally with other organisations, and take on increasing responsibility over time.

As your competence, experience and autonomy increase, there would be the opportunity to become the lead engineer supporting a local authority client.
