The post holder will participate in the dissection of categories A-E histopathology specimens as per RCPath guidelines and departmental SOPs and be included in the resident doctor dissection rota.
The post holder will participate in the development of the specimen dissectors as directed by the Specialty doctors and consultants.
Additional duties may include routine BMS Band 7 duties
Histology Specimen Dissection
- Participate in the dissection of categories A-E histopathology specimens as per RCPath
- Macroscopically examine, describe and photograph specimens where necessary
- Dissect and select relevant material for histological processing to enable accurate diagnosis of disease in the subsequent histology sections.
- Select appropriate preparatory procedures to aid diagnostic interpretation e.g. decalcification etc.
- In co-operation with the Departmental Training Officer and Specialty doctors to train trainee BMS dissectors in dissection, to assist with theoretical aspects and the selection of cases for review with consultants or specialty doctors.
- To assist and oversee the completion of portfolio paperwork and liaise with the Dissection lead in Oxford University hospital for oversight of the completion of the academic side of the portfolio.
- To update Head BMS with training progress
- Mentor or teach lower grade staff via tutorials, slide sessions and lectures
- Participate in the planning, production and delivery of lectures required for the in -house training
- Assesses the knowledge and proficiency of staff working in area of responsibility, highlighting training needs to the manager as necessary.
