Job Purpose
The Steel Fabrication workshop Supervisor with a hands on role .
Responsible for overseeing day-to-day fabrication activities within the workshop and, where required, on site.
The role ensures steelwork is manufactured safely, efficiently, and to the required drawings, specifications, tolerances, welding standards, and quality procedures.
The Supervisor coordinates fabricators, welders, labour, while supporting management with production planning, progress reporting, quality control, and issue resolution.
Key Responsibilities
· Supervise and coordinate daily steel fabrication activities.
· Ensure all work is carried out in accordance with approved drawings, fabrication details, weld procedures, specifications, project requirements, and company quality standards.
· Allocate work to fabricators, welders, , and other workshop personnel to maintain productivity and programme requirements.
· Check materials, sections, plates, fittings, bolts, and consumables against drawings, cutting lists, purchase orders, and material certificates where required.
· Monitor workmanship throughout fabrication, including fit-up, alignment, weld preparation, dimensional accuracy, finish, and compliance with inspection requirements.
· Promote and maintain good housekeeping, and safe use of workshop equipment.
· Carry out daily briefings and task instructions.
· Identify and report drawing queries, clashes, missing information, defects, material shortages, rework requirements, delays, or production risks to management promptly.
· Maintain accurate records, including daily production updates, timesheets, inspection records, NCRs, delivery notes, material traceability records, and progress reports.
· Liaise with managers, engineers and quality inspectors
· Support production planning by identifying labour, plant, welding consumables, lifting equipment, access requirements, and material needs for upcoming work.
· Ensure fabrication tools, welding sets, lifting equipment, measuring equipment, and workshop plant are used correctly, maintained appropriately, and reported if defective.
Skills and Experience
· Previous supervisory experience in a steel fabrication, structural steelwork, architectural metalwork, welding, or engineering workshop environment.
· Strong practical understanding of fabrication processes, including cutting, drilling, assembly, welding, dressing, lifting, handling, and preparation for galvanising, painting, or site installation.
· Ability to read and interpret fabrication drawings, GA drawings, weld symbols, cutting lists, specifications, and technical information.
· Knowledge of quality control processes, dimensional checking, weld inspection requirements, material traceability, and non-conformance reporting.
· Strong leadership, communication, organisation, and team coordination skills.
· Confident decision-making ability with a practical approach to resolving fabrication, sequencing, material, and quality issues.
· Ability to manage competing priorities, maintain production flow, and work to programme deadlines.
· Good attention to detail and commitment to producing accurate, compliant, and high-quality steelwork.
Qualifications and Requirements
· Relevant trade background or qualification in steel fabrication, welding, plating, structural steelwork, engineering, or a related discipline is preferred.
· Previous Supervisory experience in a lead hand, chargehand, foreman, or workshop supervisor role.
· Welding, fabrication, abrasive wheels, lifting, slinging, banksman, forklift, MEWP, or First Aid qualifications may be advantageous depending on the role.
· Familiarity with CE/UKCA marking requirements, execution classes, welding coordination, or EN 1090 procedures may be beneficial where applicable.
· Full UK driving licence may be required where travel between workshop, suppliers, coating facilities, and sites is necessary.
Reporting and Working Relationships
The Steel Fabrication Supervisor will typically report to the Operations Manager
The role will involve close working relationships with fabricator welders.
