Full job description

The Wickford Community Association is a registered charity giving local people the opportunity to become members and take part in a range of activities and social events at the Nevendon Centre in Wickford, which also includes a licenced bar area for members. As one of our Caretakers, you’ll be confident and capable of working alone and your professional, courteous manner, diligence, reliability and energy will help contribute to making our community centre a safe, inviting, and welcoming place for people of all ages and backgrounds to enjoy spending time in. You’ll be responsible for welcoming and assisting visitors and users to our centre, ensuring they are aware of and follow our health & safety and fire evacuation procedures, whilst undertaking a variety of practical tasks to support our weekday evening and weekend clubs and private room hires, including setting up and clearing away equipment and furniture in rooms, cleaning, and tidying. You’ll also support the efficient and effective operation of our centre generally.

Key Responsibilities:

Security & Access:

Opening and closing buildings, locking doors/windows, and setting alarms.
Acting as a key holder for users and contractors.
Assisting with card production for our door entry system.
Monitoring the CCTV system at the Centre and arranging access to recordings when authorised.
Monitoring the use of the car parks – both the Council owned one and ours at the rear of the building.

Maintenance & Repairs:

Performing minor DIY tasks (e.g., changing lightbulbs, fixing taps).
Reporting major repair needs.

Cleaning & Upkeep:

Maintaining cleanliness and tidiness in common areas, toilets, and external areas, including rubbish removal.
Ordering cleaning and toiletry supplies as required

Facilities – Welcome and Setup:

Be a positive, welcoming, presence to members and visitors.
Carry out viewings of rooms with prospective hirers.
Prepare rooms for events, including moving furniture and setting up equipment.
Help the Office Administrator with maintenance of the Centre’s notice board.

Health & Safety:

Monitoring premises for hazards and reporting.
Conducting fire and smoke alarm check, fire drills, checking equipment, carrying out risk assessments
Being aware of all the Health and Safety related testing and monitoring that is carried out at the Centre, e.g. Legionella water tests, and raising any related issues.

Contractor Liaison:

Arranging access and monitoring the work of external contractors or cleaners.

Other Duties:

There may be occasions when you will be asked to support our bar staff which may involve serving customers (training will be given) or clearing tables.
Being able and prepared to provide basic first aid (training will be provided).

Required Skills & Experience

Practical Skills: Experience with maintenance and DIY tools.
Reliability: Trustworthiness is essential, as the role involves key holder responsibilities. Physically: Physical fitness with the ability to undertake manual handling and lifting and set up and clear away furniture and equipment.
Communication: Ability to interact effectively with facility users, association members and other staff.
Flexibility: Requires early mornings, evenings, and weekend work for bookings.
Experience: Experience of lone working Certifications: First Aid and Fire Marshal training, or a willingness to undergo training.

Please note: Successful applicants may need to undergo a DBS (criminal record) check to help ensure they are not a threat to children or other vulnerable people and can be trusted to act as a key holder for the building.

Pay: £12.71 per hour
