We’re looking for an experienced electrician to join KG Electrical Contractors in Harpenden.
We’re less interested in how many certificates you’ve collected and more interested in whether you can actually do the job.
We need someone with solid hands-on experience who can walk into an unfamiliar situation, work out what’s going on, deal confidently with the customer and take responsibility for getting the job finished properly.
If you have your NVQ Level 3, AM2 and ECS Gold Card, great.
If you came into the industry through a different route and haven’t completed every part of the formal qualification process, we’d still like to hear from you if you have the experience and ability we’re looking for.
The work
We’re not a contractor doing the same type of work every day. Our jobs range from small call-outs and maintenance through to installations worth well into six figures.
One day you might be fault finding in somebody’s loft, the next installing garden lighting at a large private estate. The following day could be at a luxury hotel installing a cooker supply, testing a church or fitting designer lighting.
There’s domestic work, commercial work, inspection and testing, fault finding, maintenance, garden lighting and larger installation projects to get stuck into - Some jobs last an hour, Others last several months.
One of our Senior Electricians has been with us for eight years and, when asked what he likes most about working here, the first thing he said was the variety of work. So after eight years, he still isn’t turning up and doing the same thing every day.
Who tends to do well here
Some of the best electricians we’ve employed have previously worked for themselves.
It isn’t a requirement, but people who have been self-employed are often used to being thrown in at the deep end. They’ve had to solve problems, deal with customers, organise themselves and understand that the standard of the finished job matters because they’re the person dealing with the consequences if it doesn’t.
They also tend to understand the less enjoyable side of self-employment: finding work, quoting in the evenings, chasing invoices, sorting materials, keeping vans on the road and wondering where next month’s work is coming from.
Here, you can concentrate on being an electrician.
Your jobs are organised, materials are ordered and you have an office and operations team behind you for planning, technical queries, compliance, materials and customer issues when you need them.
You’ll still be trusted to make decisions and get on with the job, but you won’t be expected to run a business at the same time.
Your salary is paid on time, the van is ours to worry about and, at the end of the day, you can go home without taking the job with you.
What we expect
We don’t expect you to know absolutely everything, but we do expect an experienced electrician to have good basic technical knowledge and, more importantly, to be able to think.
If you come across a fault you haven’t seen before, we don’t expect you to immediately know the answer. We do expect you to know how to start working through it.
You’ll also need to be comfortable dealing directly with customers. A lot of our work is in privately owned and occupied homes, gardens, hotels and commercial properties, so how you work around people and how you leave the job matters just as much as whether the installation works.
As you settle into the role, we’d expect you to take ownership of your own jobs and, where appropriate, work alongside and help develop one of our trainees.
Training and progression
Training people properly has always been a core part of the business.
Our current Senior Electrician joined us as a trainee, was trained by one of our previous supervisors and has since trained another electrician through to qualification.
That electrician has now reached the point of being given his own van and jobs, with the next step being to start bringing another trainee through.
Several previous trainees are now running successful companies in the local area too.
That’s how we like people to progress here: learn, take on more responsibility and eventually help develop the next person coming through.
We run our own KG Academy, with regular in-house training, technical development and CPD.
What we’re looking for
- Several years of hands-on electrical experience
- Comfortable working independently and taking responsibility for jobs
- Good fault-finding ability
- Strong domestic experience
- Commercial experience would be useful
- Comfortable dealing directly with customers
- Good standards of workmanship
- Able to run your own jobs
- Happy to work alongside and help develop an improver or trainee
- Full UK driving licence
- Able to commute to Harpenden and work across Hertfordshire and North London
NVQ Level 3, AM2 and an ECS Gold Card are desirable, but genuine experience and ability matter more to us than having every certificate.
This isn’t a trainee or improver role, so there does need to be a solid level of experience behind you.
