We are looking for a reliable and flexible Yard Operative who is also able to act as a Relief HGV Driver, covering driver absences during annual leave and other periods of absence.
This is a hands‑on role for a genuine team player who is happy to pitch in where needed. Day to day, you’ll support our busy yard operations, ensuring stock is handled safely and efficiently. When required, you’ll step in to drive HGV vehicles, supporting our delivery operation and helping to keep things running smoothly.
Flexibility is essential, as duties will vary depending on business needs. You’ll need a positive attitude, a strong work ethic, and a willingness to support colleagues across the team.

Yard Operative/Relief HGV Driver role responsibilities
- Loading and unloading delivery vehicles by hand or with a sideloader/forklift truck
- Serving and checking customer collections
- Moving stock to storage areas and sorting and grading stock
- Picking and packing orders
- Keeping work areas clean and tidy and ensure all duties are carried out as part of a safe working environment in strict compliance with all health and safety policies and procedures (including manual handling)
- Responsibility for minimising stock losses by checking customer vehicles before they leave the site
- Answering queries from commercial customers or members of the public
- Delivering goods on a Class 2 HGV vehicle to cover other driver holidays and absence, as and when required
- Any other duties deemed as reasonable within the scope of the job role
What are the requirements to become part of our team?
- Experience of working within a Timber/Builder’s Merchant is an advantage, although full training can be provided for the right applicant
- HGV Class 2 (Category C) licence
- HIAB remote operation experience (desirable, but full training can be provided)
- Experience of multi-drop delivery driving
- Warehouse and customer service experience
- Health & Safety awareness
- Sideloader and/or FLT licence (desirable)
- Aged 21 or over (insurance requirement for all driving roles within our business)
- Availability to work full time, Monday to Friday inclusive, plus alternate Saturday mornings (0800-1200).
