Full job description

The Compatibility Scientist supports the Company’s technical functions by defining and leading compatibility assessment strategies to evaluate interactions between product chemistries and materials or devices. Responsible for defining study approaches, developing assessment methodologies and generating scientific understanding of product-material interactions, while remaining actively engaged in laboratory work.

The role operates within the Research and Development function, recognising that product validation, verification, and compatibility assessment are underpinned by scientific investigation and development of product understanding.

Responsibilities:

Define and lead compatibility assessment strategies aligned to product and device requirements
Define study approaches for material and device compatibility testing
Develop and optimise compatibility methodologies and bespoke testing approaches to support robust product evaluation and cross interactions.
Author compatibility protocols, reports and investigation plans
Conduct laboratory-based experimental work where required to support method development, troubleshooting, and complex investigations.
Provide technical oversight of laboratory execution while remaining actively engaged in experimental activities to ensure scientific integrity and effective study delivery.
Interpret material interaction, degradation and performance data, defining conclusions and recommended next steps including go/no go decisions regarding compatibility.
Engage with device manufacturers and internal stakeholders to support compatibility studies
Support product design and development through compatibility insights
Support multiple technical workstreams based on business priorities
Act as the technical authority on matters relating to product compatibility and material interaction
Work closely with the Laboratory Manager and Laboratory Technician pool to translate study designs into efficient laboratory execution
Provide technical requirements and priorities to the Laboratory Manager, recognising that laboratory resource allocation and delivery planning are managed through the Laboratory Function
Maintain Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) standards and adhere to Health & Safety policies

Requirements:

Strong grounding in relevant scientific principles of material science including understanding of material degradation mechanisms (e.g. stress cracking, oxidation, embrittlement, surface interaction)
Ability to design, interpret and evaluate scientific studies
High level of written and verbal communication skills
Ability to manage multiple workstreams and priorities
Ability to author controlled documents (protocols, reports, methods) to a high standard
Strong attention to detail and data integrity
Ability to work independently and as part of a cross-functional team
Demonstrated experience leading or contributing to scientific workstreams

Qualifications:

Degree in materials science, polymer science, or a closely related discipline (or equivalent experience)
Experience in a regulated environment (e.g. medical device, pharmaceutical, formulation or related industry) desirable
Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
Demonstrated laboratory and data analysis experience
Fluent English (spoken and written)

Pay: £29,000.00-£32,000.00 per year
