About the College/Department

Digital Solutions & Services are responsible for providing the digital platform to enable the best possible service to staff, students and stakeholders across the University and beyond. We take a collaborative approach to developing strategic goals to provide a diverse range of information technology and business services designed to support learning, teaching and research at the University of Derby.

Digital Solutions & Services are responsible for ensuring that the University’s IT capability is fit for purpose, future focused and able to protect, support and enhance the full breadth of services that will be delivered either on campus or digitally online with contributions across the department. We aim to assist students, teaching staff, support departments and collaborative partners to ensure we are making an impact on the University’s current and future digital landscape.

About the role

As a Second Line Engineer, you will play a key role in maintaining and enhancing the University's IT services, acting as an escalation point for complex technical issues and ensuring the smooth operation of critical end-user systems. This includes supporting and maintaining student computing labs, staff devices, business applications, edge networking infrastructure, and audio-visual technology across the University estate.

Working within the Service Delivery team, you will help deliver an outstanding technology experience for both staff and students by proactively monitoring system health, resolving incidents, and ensuring compliance with cyber security and operational standards. You will be responsible for triaging and managing escalated support requests, collaborating closely with infrastructure specialists to resolve underlying issues and drive continuous service improvements.

The role also offers the opportunity to contribute to technical projects and strategic initiatives, working alongside third-line engineers to deliver infrastructure enhancements and service development priorities. As part of a flexible and customer-focused Service Delivery function, you will be expected to provide support across multiple teams and locations, adapting to the evolving needs of the University.

About You

We are looking for a proactive and customer-focused IT professional who combines strong technical knowledge with the ability to deliver excellent service. The ideal candidate will hold a relevant degree or HND and/or possess equivalent professional experience, supported by a genuine interest in current and emerging IT technologies.

You will be a high-performing team player who thrives in a collaborative, multi-disciplinary IT and AV environment, leading by example through professionalism, accountability, and a positive approach to problem-solving. With broad knowledge across technologies such as application delivery, networking, operating systems, and end-user computing, you will be confident in diagnosing and resolving complex technical issues while maintaining a strong focus on customer satisfaction.

The successful candidate will demonstrate excellent analytical and decision-making skills, taking ownership of problems through to resolution and responding effectively to changing priorities. You will be consultative and collaborative in your approach, building strong relationships with colleagues, stakeholders, and customers across the University, while acting as a positive ambassador for Digital Solutions and Services.

A commitment to continuous learning and improvement is essential. You will actively seek opportunities to develop your own skills, contribute to service enhancements, and identify process improvements that drive efficiency, resilience, and an outstanding user experience.

Principal accountabilities

Proactively support the Digital Operations Manager and Team Leaders in the delivery of Second Line projects and tasks, which may vary in scales and technical levels, whilst providing the necessary governance of IT Services.

Act as a technical reference point for other team members and lead in the delivery of assigned project based work with a solutions focused approach.

Identify and embed problem management, identify improvements, and support skill development within the team.

Maintain and optimise IT systems, ensuring efficiency, reliability, and alignment with University priorities.

Ensure systems meet regulatory and security standards, working with DS&S teams to strengthen processes.

Where necessary, deliver 24/7 Out of hours support on a rota basis to support the Service Delivery and Infrastructure Teams.

Assisting with service ownership / service delivery – contributing to key strategies, roadmaps, designs, developing and then implementing / updating services within the team, ensuring all documentation is in place and service transition is seamless across the various internal teams.

Mentors others on priority and diagnosis of incidents according to agreed procedures. Investigates causes of incidents and seeks resolution. Escalates unresolved incidents. Facilitates recovery, following resolution of incidents. Documents and closes resolved incidents according to agreed procedures and ensures lessons learned.

Responsible for ensuring standards for hardware, software and configuration management are maintained.

Responsible for ensuring Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity processes are in place and tested.

Initiates and monitors actions to investigate and resolve problems in systems, processes and services. Determines problem fixes / remedies. Assists with the implementation of agreed remedies and preventative measures.

Working with 3rd party suppliers and support partners to log escalated service tickets and proactively work with these to reach a speedy resolution.

Being a ‘team player’ and working in a collaborative team environment to deliver complex solutions to multiple internal and external business units.

Provide high-quality support to staff and students, manage expectations, and promote a service-focused culture.

Person specification

Essential Criteria

Qualifications

Relevant Degree/HND or demonstrable equivalent experience.
Relevant professional certifications E.G. Microsoft Desktop, CCNA, Jamf, ITIL.

Experience

Experience of a senior level of technical responsibility in a service delivery environment.
Experience and knowledge of leading technical projects across users and leading change initiatives.
Experience of meeting customers, managing expectations and providing a logical solution focused approach to issue resolution.

Skills, knowledge & abilities

Proven knowledge of a broad range of technologies specifically within the desktop environment e.g. application delivery, networking, operating systems, and their capabilities and benefits.
Solid understanding of establishing an IT infrastructure including core understanding of the management systems incorporated such as Active Directory, Windows Server etc.
Proven knowledge of at least one of the following technology areas: networking, infrastructure, communications, front-end technologies, applications, audio-visual technologies.
Excellent Communication and persuasion skills (verbal and written) including communication of technical concepts to non-technical colleagues at a range of levels within the organisation and developing consensus within disparate views.
Highly self-motivated, organised, adaptable and disciplined with an ability to work to tight deadlines whilst managing multiple tasks and deliverables. Able to prioritise effectively and an attention to detail and drive for excellence.
Ability to deal with difficult issues within a continuously changing environment, managing issues, objections and differences of opinion positively and effectively.
Evidenced ability of acting as an exemplar individual in terms of high performance within a multi-disciplinary IT delivery team and contributing to the overall team’s performance constructively and professionally.
Understanding of information security and governance.

Requirement to participate in Response Team Rota as key part of Service Delivery responsibilities.
Flexibility with regard to working hours and travel between sites.

Desirable Criteria

Qualifications

Professional and /or technical qualifications, e.g. PRINCE 2 /ITIL / CCNA / MCP or substantial, applied equivalent experience.

Experience

Experience of working within a Higher Educational Institution.

Skills, knowledge and abilities

Scripting skills e.g. PowerShell
Experience of maintaining, operating, troubleshooting AV equipment
Experience of operating, developing AV management tools e.g. Crestron Systems/Fusion etc.
Understanding of the importance of prioritising resources, experience of working with external 3rd party contracts, and delivering service against SLA’s and OLA’s.
