UK Restoration Services is a specialist contractor delivering conservation, restoration, structural repair and refurbishment projects to historic buildings, landmarks and heritage assets across the UK.
We are looking for an experienced, hands-on Site Manager to take responsibility for the safe, efficient and high-quality delivery of our projects.
This is a practical site-based role. In addition to managing the project and site team, the successful candidate will be expected to work alongside the team and be actively involved in carrying out the works when required. Strong practical construction experience and the ability to work competently on the tools are essential.
The role will involve managing our directly employed, multi-disciplinary team of skilled tradespeople, alongside specialist subcontractors and suppliers.
Our projects are located throughout the UK. The successful candidate must therefore be willing and able to work away from home for periods of up to two weeks at a time, depending on project requirements. Accommodation and applicable working-away arrangements will be provided in accordance with company policy.
The role
You will take day-to-day responsibility for managing site activities and ensuring works are completed safely, professionally and in accordance with the programme, specification and required quality standards.
Key responsibilities will include:
- Managing the daily operation of heritage construction and restoration sites
- Working on the tools and assisting with the physical delivery of the works
- Leading and working alongside an in-house, multi-disciplinary team of skilled operatives and craftspeople
- Managing specialist subcontractors, suppliers and other site personnel
- Planning labour, materials, plant and subcontract resources
- Allocating tasks and providing practical guidance to the site team
- Monitoring progress against the project programme and reporting potential delays
- Ensuring works comply with drawings, specifications, conservation requirements and agreed methods
- Carrying out quality inspections and maintaining appropriate site records
- Coordinating inspections, benchmarks and approvals with the Contracts Manager and project team
- Managing site health, safety, environmental and welfare arrangements
- Delivering site inductions, toolbox talks and daily briefings
- Reviewing and implementing RAMS, permits and other site controls
- Maintaining effective communication with clients, architects, contract administrators and other stakeholders
- Identifying variations, additional works, delays and site issues at an early stage
- Ensuring the site is organised, secure and presented professionally
- Supporting the training and development of directly employed team members
About you
You will be an experienced and practical Site Manager who is equally comfortable managing a project, leading a team and carrying out hands-on construction work.
Essential requirements include:
- Strong practical construction or building restoration experience
- Proven ability and willingness to work competently on the tools
- Previous experience supervising or managing construction, restoration, refurbishment or specialist building projects
- Experience managing directly employed operatives and subcontractors
- The ability to lead by example and work alongside the site team
- Strong leadership, planning and communication skills
- A good understanding of site health and safety requirements
- The ability to interpret drawings, specifications, programmes and RAMS
- A strong focus on workmanship, quality control and attention to detail
- The ability to maintain clear and accurate site records
- A full UK driving licence
- Willingness to travel and work away from home for up to two weeks at a time
- Relevant qualifications such as SMSTS or SSSTS.
Experience within heritage, conservation, listed buildings, traditional construction or complex refurbishment would be particularly beneficial. Applications are also welcomed from experienced supervisors, forepersons or working Site Managers with transferable skills and a genuine interest in historic buildings.
