Warren Local is a busy, community-focused convenience store and international supermarket. We stock a wide selection of everyday essentials, groceries, fresh produce, drinks and international products.
We are seeking a reliable, organised and proactive Retail Store Manager / All-Rounder to take responsibility for the day-to-day operation of the shop. This is a hands-on management position. The successful candidate will manage employees, oversee stock, maintain till operations and work directly on the shop floor and tills when required.
This position would suit someone who understands that effective retail management involves both leadership and practical involvement. You must be prepared to supervise the store while also completing everyday duties such as serving customers, replenishing shelves, checking deliveries and maintaining cleanliness.
Main Purpose of the Role
The Retail Store Manager / All-Rounder will be responsible for ensuring that Warren Local operates efficiently, professionally and safely.
Your main priorities will be to:
- * Maintain appropriate stock levels throughout the store

- * Support the continued growth and improvement of the business
- Key Responsibilities
Store Management
- * Take responsibility for the smooth day-to-day running of the shop
- * Open and close the premises in accordance with company procedures
- * Ensure that the store is ready for customers at the beginning of each trading day
- * Complete opening, closing and security checks
- * Maintain a safe, clean and professional shopping environment
- * Identify operational problems and resolve them promptly
- * Report serious concerns, maintenance problems or security incidents to the business owner
- * Ensure that company instructions and store procedures are followed consistently
- * Maintain high standards of customer service, stock availability and store presentation
- * Assist with implementing new products, promotions, equipment and procedures
- * Take ownership of problems rather than leaving them unresolved
Stock Management
* Monitor stock levels across all store departments
* Ensure that popular and essential products remain available
* Place or prepare supplier orders accurately and on time
* Review sales patterns to identify fast-selling and slow-selling products
* Check incoming deliveries against invoices and delivery notes
* Report missing, damaged, incorrect or short-dated products
* Ensure stock is stored safely and in the correct location
* Organise the stockroom so that products can be located easily
* Replenish shelves, chillers, freezers and displays throughout the day
* Rotate stock using the first-expiry, first-out principle
* Complete regular expiry-date checks
* Remove damaged, leaking, spoiled or expired products immediately
* Monitor waste and investigate avoidable losses
* Carry out full and partial stock counts when required
* Investigate significant stock discrepancies
* Help prevent over-ordering, under-ordering and unnecessary wastage
* Ensure that products are correctly priced and labelled
* Maintain attractive and commercially effective product displays
Till and Cash Management
* Work on the tills as part of the normal role, particularly during busy periods, staff breaks and absences
* Serve customers politely, accurately and efficiently
* Process cash, card and other approved payment methods
* Complete till opening and closing procedures
* Count tills and reconcile daily takings
* Investigate till shortages, overages and transaction discrepancies
* Ensure refunds, voids and price overrides are handled correctly
* Monitor employee compliance with cash-handling procedures
* Keep till areas clean, organised and appropriately stocked
* Arrange cash floats and change where necessary
* Prepare cash for banking or collection in accordance with company procedures
* Protect cash, payment terminals, keys and other store assets
* Escalate suspected theft, fraud or misuse of the till system
Employee Supervision
* Supervise employees during their shifts
* Allocate daily duties and ensure that work is completed properly
* Prepare or assist with staff rotas
* Arrange suitable cover for sickness, holidays and unexpected absences
* Monitor punctuality, attendance, conduct and performance
* Provide clear instructions and reasonable support to employees
* Train new employees in tills, customer service, replenishment, cleaning and store procedures
* Ensure staff understand their responsibilities
* Hold employees accountable for repeated failures to complete assigned duties
* Address minor workplace concerns professionally and fairly
* Report serious disciplinary, attendance or performance concerns to the business owner
* Encourage teamwork and respectful communication
* Ensure staff breaks are managed without disrupting store operations
* Lead by example through punctuality, honesty, professionalism and a strong work ethic
* Create a positive working environment while maintaining appropriate standards and boundaries
Customer Service
* Welcome customers and provide helpful, professional service
* Assist customers in locating products
* Respond to questions about prices, products and availability
* Handle complaints calmly and seek practical solutions
* Deal professionally with difficult or disruptive customers
* Escalate serious incidents where necessary
* Ensure that customer concerns are not ignored
* Maintain a polite and respectful manner, even during busy periods
* Build positive relationships with regular customers and the local community
* Ensure employees provide the same standard of customer service
Age-Restricted Sales and Compliance
* Ensure that all age-restricted products are sold in accordance with the law and company policy
* Follow the store’s age-verification procedure
* Ensure that staff request acceptable identification where required
* Refuse sales where acceptable proof of age is not provided
* Ensure refusals are recorded correctly
* Monitor staff compliance with rules concerning alcohol, tobacco, vaping products, lottery products and other restricted items
* Support staff when dealing with disputed or refused sales
* Ensure required notices and statutory signage remain visible
* Complete relevant training and ensure employees are appropriately trained
* Report suspected proxy purchasing, fraud or unlawful activity
Store Standards and Cleaning
* Ensure that the shop floor, counters, tills, entrances and stockroom remain clean and organised
* Check that floors are clear of hazards and spillages
* Arrange immediate cleaning of breakages or spillages
* Ensure waste is removed and disposed of correctly
* Maintain a suitable cleaning schedule
* Check that cleaning duties are completed to the required standard
* Ensure shelves, chillers, freezers and display units are kept clean
* Monitor the condition of baskets, equipment and customer areas
* Keep entrances, windows, doors and external areas presentable
* Report pest-control concerns immediately
* Ensure food products are handled and stored hygienically
Security and Loss Prevention
* Remain alert to shoplifting, fraud and suspicious behaviour
* Ensure high-value products are displayed or stored appropriately
* Monitor CCTV where authorised and in accordance with company procedures
* Follow procedures for suspected theft or aggressive behaviour
* Avoid placing staff or customers at unnecessary risk
* Ensure that keys, alarm codes and secure areas are properly controlled
* Check that doors, shutters and alarms are secured when closing
* Report theft, attempted theft, damage and security incidents
* Protect confidential business and customer information
* Maintain accurate incident records where required
Health and Safety
* Help maintain a safe environment for customers, employees and visitors
* Identify hazards and take appropriate action
* Ensure fire exits and walkways remain unobstructed
* Check that emergency equipment is accessible
* Follow accident and incident-reporting procedures
* Ensure employees use equipment safely
* Report faulty refrigeration, electrical equipment, shelving or other hazards
* Follow manual-handling procedures when moving deliveries or heavy stock
* Cooperate with food-safety, licensing, trading standards and other compliance requirements
Administration
* Maintain accurate records relating to stock, deliveries, wastage, refusals, incidents and till discrepancies
* Check invoices and supplier paperwork
* Communicate with suppliers regarding shortages, substitutions or damaged products
* Prepare basic sales, stock and staffing information for the business owner
* Respond to operational messages and instructions promptly
* Keep company documents organised and confidential
* Support pricing updates and promotional changes
* Assist with basic store reporting and performance monitoring
Essential Requirements
The successful candidate must have:
* Previous experience in retail, convenience stores, supermarkets or a similar customer-facing environment
* Previous supervisory, team-leader or management experience
* Experience using electronic point-of-sale and till systems
* Experience handling cash and reconciling tills
* A good understanding of stock control and shelf replenishment
* Strong customer-service skills
* Good organisational and time-management skills
* The ability to supervise employees confidently and fairly
* The ability to remain calm during busy or difficult situations
* Good written and spoken English
* Basic numeracy and computer skills
* A reliable and punctual approach to work
* The ability to work independently without constant supervision
* The ability to complete physical retail duties, including standing for extended periods and safely handling deliveries
* Flexibility to work different shifts, including weekends and evenings
* The legal right to work in the United Kingdom
