We’re looking for an experienced Transport Operations Controller to join our busy and successful planning team based at our Newark depot, supporting our key customer,.
About the Role:
As a Transport Operations Controller, you'll play a vital role in executing real-time transport plans, managing driver and fleet resources, and ensuring first-class customer service is delivered every time.
This is a hands-on, fast-paced role requiring excellent communication, planning, and problem-solving skills. You'll liaise daily with third party hauliers, customers, and our driving teams.
The successful candidate will provide operational planning and process skills which maximises the utilisation of vehicles and minimises hours and mileage and ensures delivery on time targets are met.
The position is accountable for 24/7 execution of the allocated daily plan in an efficient and cost-effective manner within a safe and compliant environment. Working as an integral member of the Planning team.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan and coordinate daily transport operations to meet customer delivery targets.
- Ensure fleet and drivers are available for efficient route execution.
- Brief/debrief drivers and maintain accurate operational records.
- Monitor live transport systems and update schedules in real time.
- Manage third-party bookings, washouts, and vehicle maintenance planning.
- Escalate operational issues, resource shortages, and delivery delays.
- Communicate with customers, drivers, and internal teams to resolve issues.
- Oversee agency, subcontractor, and support resources.
- Track forecasts, KPIs, compliance, and transport performance.
- Record vehicle defects and breakdowns, supporting operational continuity.
- Deputise for the Transport Planner when required.
Skills & Experience
- Strong transport planning and logistics coordination experience.
- Knowledge of driver hours (WTD), vehicle compliance, and fleet planning.
- Excellent communication, organisation, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to manage priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong stakeholder, supplier, and customer relationship management.
- Good geographical knowledge and financial awareness.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook) and transport systems.
- Self-motivated, detail-oriented, and able to work independently or as part of a team.
Qualifications
- A good standard of formal education.
- International & UK CPC holder (Preferred not desirable).
