The Mechanical Maintenance Engineer role is to support a full and diverse mechanical engineering service within Babraham Institute buildings located on the Babraham Research Campus. This includes attending to boiler plant, air conditioning plant and ancillary services including plumbing work.
Starting salary from £27,514 to £35,258 per annum plus £4,000 Recruitment and Retention allowance and an on-call allowance of £3,000 per annum. Recruitment and Retention Allowances are permanent and pensionable.
The post holder will be responsible for carrying out day to day remedial and PPM tasks to maintain the Institutes operations and compliance for all relevant regulations and legislation. They will work with and assist other disciplines within the maintenance department to maintain a high standard of delivery to BI science, including departmental non-mechanical tasks as requested by BCE Managers.
Applicants must have served an approved mechanical apprenticeship, or Armed Forces equivalent (or equivalent qualification). This post would suit a qualified plant technician, HVAC technician or a general fitter with a wide experience of engineering plant. Plumbing experience is desirable as is experience of working on a multi-building site and of working with building management systems, (preferably Trend 963 or IQ Vision).
This role requires the successful candidate to be onsite. The post holder is overseen day to day by the Mechanical Manager.
Key areas of Responsibility
· Carry out both planned and reactive maintenance on the Babraham Research Campus.
· Support the Mechanical Engineering Manager on the implementation of O&M, associated systems and new works.
· Responsible for operation and routine maintenance of LPHW/ETP/Steam raising plant/Ventilation plant.
· Provide cover for emergencies outside normal working hour’s weekend working including participation in the ‘on call’ rota system approximately 6-8 weeks per annum on a rota basis.
· Monitor and respond to the Computerised Building Management system (training will be provided if required).
· Be prepared to provide a multi-skilled function in all aspects of services at the Babraham Campus i.e. steam fitting, plumbing, vehicles maintenance, fabrication frames.
· Carry out minor new works to new equipment and building modification/upgrades.
· Carry out investigations into defects to assist the Mechanical Engineering Supervisor/Manager in providing reports.
· The ability to identify issues, analyse root causes, and implement solutions across a variety of plant including Steam, water, AHU.
· Attend relevant training courses identified by BCE Managers.
· Manage own workload from mobile maintenance software.
Qualifications/Relevant Experience
- A recognised engineering apprenticeship (e.g. ONC/BTECH, City & Guilds qualification in mechanical engineering, NVQ level 3 in Plumbing and Heating or time-served apprenticeship in mechanical engineering)
- Experience of maintenance of plant including steam, potable water, RO, chilled water, district heating, brine, AHU, effluent treatment.
- Practical knowledge of health and safety legislation which affects the workplace.
