Job Purpose
The gardens at Priscilla Bacon Lodge are an integral part of the hospice environment and support the wellbeing of patients, families, staff and visitors. Designed by James Alexander-Sinclair, the site compromises 8 acres, including 4.5 acres of native wildflower meadow, extensive herbaceous borders, formal lawns, orchard, newly planted woodland, ponds, hedging, greenhouse, and physio garden/raised planters.
The Assistant Gardener will support the Head Gardener to maintain all areas to a high standard, with a focus on creating a welcoming and safe environment that looks great at all times of the year.
This is a rewarding and hands-on role within a unique garden setting, suited to a hard-working, compassionate gardener who values attention to detail with an emphasis on gardening with creativity
Key Responsibilities
- Weeding, mulching, maintaining borders
- Planting - trees, hedging, perennials, bulbs
- Pruning and hedge cutting
- Watering - particularly new trees and hedging
- Mowing and strimming of formal lawns and carparks
- Assisting with management of the greenhouse - seed sowing, propagation, potting on, watering
- Assisting in management of regular and corporate volunteer groups
- Assisting with annual cutting of wildflower meadow (late July/August)
- Assisting in preparation and management of open garden events (on site)
- Assisting Head Gardener to deliver practical workshops with patients and community groups
Person Specification
Essential:
- Minimum 1 year gardening experience
- Experience mowing, strimming, and hedge cutting
- Confidence and experience operating garden machinery - hedge cutters, petrol mowers, strimmers
- Experience in general garden maintenance - pruning shrubs and roses, weeding, mulching, cutting back herbaceous borders
- Strong attention to detail
- Working in all weathers/all year round
- Confident communication skills, with the ability to interact with empathy and professionalism
- Proactive and flexible approach to work
- Good plant knowledge
Desirable:
- Experience delivering horticultural or creative workshops
- Understanding of hospice/care environments
- Experience in growing and propagation
- Experience managing teams of volunteers
- Experience with wildflower meadow management
