About Decron
Decron is a specialist contractor delivering high-quality solutions across roofing, cladding, rainscreen systems and fire remediation. Operating from regional offices in Clitheroe, Middlesbrough, Doncaster and Cannock, we work with clients across the UK on complex, high-value projects. As part of our continued growth, we are looking for a Technical Surveyor to join our team.
ROLE PURPOSE
The Technical Surveyor is a key operational role within the Technical Department at Decron Ltd, responsible for carrying out roof surveys on new and existing buildings, translating those surveys into technical designs and system layouts, and coordinating the production of construction drawings with the Draughtsman before initiating materials procurement.
The postholder acts as the critical link between the site, the drawing office, and the supply chain, ensuring that every metal roofing or cladding package is accurately measured, correctly designed, properly drawn, and efficiently ordered. The Technical Surveyor works across multiple live projects simultaneously, managing their own workload from initial site visit through to materials delivery.
This is a hands-on, field-active role that requires a confident and technically capable individual who is equally comfortable working at height on a roof survey as they are producing a system layout in the office or briefing a Draughtsman on a complex flashing detail.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Site Surveys & Measurement
- Carry out detailed measured surveys of roofs and building envelopes on new-build, refurbishment, and re-roofing projects
- Produce accurate survey notes, sketches, and photographic records on site, capturing all dimensions, existing conditions, penetrations, upstands, abutments, and drainage points
- Identify and record existing roof construction, insulation, structural framing, and fixing substrate as part of the survey process
- Note and report any structural defects, water ingress, or existing damage observed during survey visits
- Carry out surveys safely, including working at height, using access equipment and following the company's safe systems of work at all times
- Liaise with the client, main contractor, or building owner to arrange access and coordinate surveys efficiently
Technical Design & System Layout
- Translate survey measurements and project specifications into a technical design for the metal roofing or cladding system, selecting the appropriate product, profile, and colour in line with the specification or architect's requirements
- Produce system layouts, panel schedules, and fixing patterns that optimise material usage and minimise waste
- Calculate roof areas, panel lengths, and quantities with precision, cross-referencing survey measurements against structural drawings
- Carry out/organise and commission U-value calculations, condensation risk analyses, and acoustic assessments as required by the specification
- Identify non-standard conditions requiring bespoke details (complex abutments, curved sections, roof penetrations, parapet junctions) and develop workable technical solutions
- Liaise with manufacturers' technical departments to obtain product approvals, fixing calculations, and system-specific design guidance
Drawing Coordination
- Brief the Draughtsman clearly and thoroughly on each project, providing survey notes, sketches, system layouts, and all information required to produce construction drawings
- Review and check all drawings produced by the Draughtsman before issue, ensuring dimensions, details, and annotations are accurate and complete
- Manage the drawing programme for each project, ensuring drawings are produced and approved in time to support the site programme
- Coordinate drawing approvals with the architect, engineer, or principal contractor, managing comments and resubmissions
- Maintain the drawing register for each project, ensuring document control is kept up to date
- Produce sketch details and mark-ups for the Draughtsman on bespoke or non-standard conditions
Materials Procurement & Scheduling
- Produce accurate and complete materials schedules from the finalised design and drawings, covering panels, sheets, flashings, fixings, fillers, and all associated components
- Issue enquiries to approved suppliers and manufacturers, obtaining competitive quotations for materials in line with the project budget
- Place material orders in a timely manner to ensure delivery programmes align with site requirements, allowing sufficient lead time for manufactured or long-lead items
- Coordinate with the Plant & Logistics team on delivery scheduling, off-loading requirements, and site storage
- Track orders from placement to delivery, proactively managing any supplier delays and communicating impacts to the Contracts Manager
- Reconcile materials delivered against the schedule at project completion, identifying variances and updating records accordingly
Technical Support & Communication
- Provide ongoing technical support to site supervisors and lead roofers during the installation phase, resolving queries relating to the design, details, or materials
- Attend site during critical installation stages, particularly at eaves, verge, abutment, and gutter details, to ensure the design is being followed correctly
- Liaise with the QA Manager on quality inspections, providing technical input on sign-off criteria and acceptable standards
- Attend design team meetings and client technical meetings as required, representing the company's technical position
- Support the Technical Manager with warranty applications, providing the survey data, system records, and installation evidence required by manufacturers
- Contribute to the Technical Manager's RFI log, providing written responses to technical queries from site or the design team
Reporting & Administration
- Maintain accurate project files for each contract, including survey notes, design calculations, drawing registers, materials schedules, and order confirmations
- Report to the Technical Manager on project progress, highlighting any design issues, procurement risks, or drawing delays
- Contribute to post-project reviews, identifying lessons learned on survey accuracy, material wastage, and drawing production efficiency
