Full job description

Role: Caretaker

Location: Pyrland School, Taunton

Start Date: ASAP

Hours: 37 per week, Monday to Friday, all year round.

Salary: Grade 4, scale point 7 - 10, £13.69 - £14.35 per hour, £26,403 - £27,694 per annum (pay award pending).

Pyrland School is looking to appoint a dedicated Caretaker to play a key role in ensuring our school remains a secure, well-maintained and inspiring place for students, staff and visitors.

About the Role

As our Caretaker, you will be responsible for the day-to-day maintenance, security and smooth operation of the school site. You will be the main keyholder and will play a vital role in ensuring our buildings and grounds are safe, secure, clean and well presented.

Working closely with the Headteacher and wider site team and contractors where appropriate, co-ordinate maintenance activities and respond to the varying needs of a busy school environment.

Key responsibilities include:

Acting as the school's main keyholder, opening and securing the premises.
Managing site security, alarms and responding to emergency call-outs.
Co-ordinating maintenance and repair works and overseeing contractors on site.
Operating and monitoring heating systems and site services efficiently.
Maintaining the school grounds, pathways and external areas including during adverse weather.
Carrying out general maintenance, porterage and emergency cleaning duties.
Supporting the wider school community with room set-ups, deliveries and site-related requests.

About You

We are looking for someone who:

Is reliable, adaptable and takes pride in their work.
Has excellent practical and problem-solving skills.
Can prioritise workloads and respond calmly to changing demands.
Has good communication and customer service skills.
Works effectively both independently and as part of a team.
Holds a current full and clean driving licence.
Understands the importance of health and safety and safe working practices.
Is confident using basic IT and mobile devices.
Is physically able to undertake the duties of the role.

Desirable experience includes:

General building maintenance or caretaking experience.
A relevant trade or technical qualification.
Experience of working within a school or education setting.
Knowledge of fire safety, asbestos awareness, Legionella and Health and Safety regulations.
