Full job description

Salary: £26,403 - £28,598
Hours: 37 hours per week
Working Pattern: Monday to Friday, with occasional evening and weekends
Contract: Permanent
Location: Deane House, Taunton / Some working from the TTC Depot and hybrid working.
Closing Date: Wednesday 26 August 2026 at 9am

Are you a highly organised individual with a passion for accuracy and a keen eye for detail? Taunton Town Council is looking for an enthusiastic Finance Assistant to become an integral part of our finance team. In this rewarding role, you will play a key part in supporting the Council’s financial management, helping to ensure our resources are managed effectively and transparently. Your work will directly contribute to the delivery of high-quality services and community initiatives that positively impact residents across Taunton.

Key responsibilities will include:

Assist staff with Purchase Quotes – converting approved quotes into purchase orders for issue to suppliers.
Ensure all receipts of goods or confirmation of service are accurately recorded in the financial system, supported by appropriate documentation.
Process supplier invoices accurately and promptly, matching them with supporting documentation, ensuring each invoice is approved in line with the Council’s approval matrix, and helping to ensure accounts are settled in a timely manner.
Check that financial coding is applied correctly to ensure accurate and reliable financial reporting.
Process transactions on the trade card and One-Card, ensuring information is entered promptly, verified against supporting receipts and authorised in line with council procedures.
Set up of new suppliers on the accounting system, ensuring all information is entered accurately.
Issue sales invoices for goods and services on behalf of the Council and assist with credit control to ensure timely payment.
Ensure VAT is applied and recorded correctly on all invoices raised, in line with current regulations and Council financial procedures.
Assist with finance-related queries from staff, suppliers and service users.
Perform monthly supplier statement reconciliations.
Assist with preparing and processing payments to suppliers.
Assist with monitoring the finance mailbox, ensuring enquiries and requests are reviewed, directed or responded to in a timely and professional manner.
Assist with responding to information requests from internal and external auditors, ensuring all documentation is provided accurately and in a timely manner.
Respond to general telephone enquiries when members of the administrative team are unavailable, ensuring a helpful and efficient service.
Promote and model the Council’s PACT values – Promote Respect Always, Ambitious and Accountable, Compassionate and Trustworthy – in all aspects of leadership, decision-making, and service delivery.
