Machina Engineering Ltd is an advanced precision engineering firm, manufacturing for a range of high-end industries including defence, aerospace, motorsport, oil & gas and more. Located in Thirsk, next to Thirsk station, the company offers 24/7 autonomous component production using state-of-the-art automation cells, supplying some of the UK's leading companies and working to a quality management system that operates to aerospace EN9100:2018 (AS9100).
We're now looking for an experienced Shop Floor Manager to take full ownership of day-to-day operations on the shop floor. This is a senior, hands-on role for someone who can keep the machines running, lead and support the setters and operators, manage the flow of work in and out, and hold the standard on a shop floor operating to EN9100 aerospace quality requirements. You'll be working with fully automated, state-of-the-art Hermle 5-axis machining centres, Haas CNC mills, Automated Zoller tool pre-setters and high-end workholding and tooling — and you'll be the person who keeps it all running smoothly.
Responsibilities
- Take overall ownership of daily shop floor operations across the Hermle 5-axis cells, Haas mills and tool-room operations — keeping production running smoothly and maximising machine utilisation and 24/7 lights-out production
- Act as the first point of contact for setters and operators, supporting and troubleshooting setups, workholding, tooling and Heidenhain/Haas control issues
- Work with our in-house software systems, encompassing all areas of internal operations
- Manage the flow of goods in and out — ensuring incoming material is booked in with full certification and batch traceability and finished parts are dispatched with the correct documentation
- Ensure all work is carried out in line with our EN9100 quality management system, working closely with the quality department — parts manufactured to the released drawing and current revision, in-process checks completed, batch traceability maintained end to end, job documentation accurate and complete, and non-conformances identified, contained and escalated
- Support First Article Inspection (AS9102) and Certificate of Conformity requirements alongside quality
- Maintain document and revision control on the shop floor — current drawings, setup sheets and work instructions at the machine, and calibrated measuring equipment in use
- Maintain the organisation, housekeeping and 5S of the workshop — tooling, fixtures, consumables and job documentation with a keen attention to detail
- Keep the machines and automation running reliably — coordinating preventative maintenance, tooling and consumable stock, minimising downtime
- Drive continuous improvement in process, cycle times, throughput and OEE alongside the programming and engineering team
- Lead, support and develop the shop floor team, setting the standard for quality, discipline and accountability
- Uphold key health and safety standards across the shop floor
Desired Skills & Experience
- Proven experience in a supervisory or management role on a precision CNC machining shop floor
- Strong hands-on background in CNC setting and operating
- Experience working within a regulated quality environment, with a solid grasp of traceability, document control and non-conformance handling
- Familiarity with Heidenhain control and/or automation systems
- Experience with zero-point and modular workholding and heat-shrink tooling
- Confident reading and interpreting engineering drawings, technical documentation and GD&T
- Solid understanding of cutting tools, materials and machining processes
- Competent with inspection tools (micrometres, verniers, gauges) and in-process quality control
- Knowledge of AS9102 First Article Inspection and material certification an advantage
- Eligibility for UK security clearance (existing SC clearance an advantage)
- Highly organised, calm under pressure, and able to lead and work as part of a team

Security
Due to the defence and aerospace work we undertake, applicants must be eligible to obtain UK security clearance. Existing SC clearance is an advantage but not essential. As a minimum, the successful candidate will be required to meet Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) checks.
