A number of exciting opportunities have arisen for Band 4 Probation Officer roles, with vacancies across both community and custodial settings, including Flint Probation, Wrexham Probation, and HMP Berwyn Prison Offender Management Unit. These posts provide an excellent opportunity for Probation Officers to develop and broaden their skills across both prison and community environments, and to influence the delivery of Sentence Management, Offender Management in Custody (OMiC), and community-based supervision.
The roles will involve working with individuals both in custody and in the community. In community settings, Probation Officers play a central role in supervising individuals subject to community orders and post-release licences, working to assess and manage risk, support rehabilitation, and reduce reoffending. This includes undertaking structured inductions, completing assessments of risk, needs and strengths, and developing and actively managing sentence plans tailored to the individual.
Probation Officers will build and maintain professional relationships with people on probation, using evidence-based approaches to support behavioural change, challenge offending behaviour and promote compliance with court orders and licence conditions. They are responsible for monitoring progress against sentence plans, responding to non-compliance (including enforcement, breach or recall decisions), and ensuring that individuals are engaged with appropriate interventions, services and support networks.
The role requires multi-agency working, including liaison with courts, police, prisons, local authorities and third sector partners to manage risk and deliver coordinated interventions. Probation Officers will contribute to protecting victims and the public through effective risk management planning, sharing information appropriately, and participating in multi-agency forums such as MAPPA.
Across both custody and community, successful candidates will ensure that sentence planning is effectively delivered to manage and reduce the risk of reoffending and serious harm, while improving rehabilitation and resettlement outcomes. In custody, this includes contributing to sentence management under OMiC, working alongside prison offender managers and key workers. In the community, it includes preparing individuals for release, supporting their transition, and maintaining continuity of supervision.
Postholders will be responsible for collating, verifying and presenting information for a range of formal settings, including court reports and Parole Boards, and will contribute to recommendations relating to Release on Temporary Licence (ROTL), Home Detention Curfew (HDC), licence conditions and recall decisions. They will also ensure accurate and timely recording of case activity using HMPPS systems.
These roles require strong professional judgement, the ability to manage complex cases, and a commitment to public protection. They offer the opportunity to operate across the full offender journey, working flexibly between custody and community as part of an integrated offender management approach.

Working Arrangements & Further Information
The MoJ offers Hybrid Working arrangements w business need allows. This is an informal, non-contractual form of flexible working that blends working from your base location, different MoJ sites and / or from home (please be aware that this role can only be worked in the UK and not overseas). Some roles will not be suitable for Hybrid Working. Similarly, Hybrid Working will not suit everyone’s circumstances. Arrangements will be discussed and agreed with the successful candidate(s) and subject to regular review.
For nationally advertised roles, the successful candidate(s) will be appointed to a MoJ office location, which may include their nearest Justice Collaboration Centre or Justice Satellite Office. This will be discussed and agreed on the completion of pre-employment checks.
Some of MoJ’s terms and conditions of service are changing as part of Civil Service reform. The changes will apply to staff joining MoJ who are new to the Civil Service. Staff joining MoJ from other civil service employers will transfer onto the new MoJ terms if they are already on 'modernised' terms in their current post or onto 'unmodernised' MoJ terms if they are on 'unmodernised' terms at their current post. Standard full time working hours are 37 hours per week excluding breaks which are unpaid. Annual Leave
