Join Paterson & Cooke’s specialist laboratory team and contribute to testing that supports mining and engineering projects across Europe and Asia.
We are looking for an experienced Laboratory Technician to join our team in Cornwall. This is a varied, hands-on position involving mineral samples, slurry testing and specialist laboratory equipment. The results produced by our laboratory team are used by our engineers to inform the design of mine backfill, tailings and slurry transport systems for international clients.
You will have the opportunity to develop specialist testing skills and work closely with engineers and colleagues across our global business. There may also be opportunities to support test work at client sites and spend time at our international offices.
This is a full-time position working 40 hours per week with some flexibility around start and finish times. The role is based at our office at Wheal Jane Earth Science Park, Baldhu, Truro, TR3 6EE.
Typical responsibilities include:
- Receiving, preparing, splitting, tracking, disposing of or returning samples
- Following defined test work methodologies accurately and consistently
- Carrying out laboratory testing to agreed schedules
- Recording, entering and analysing test data
- Preparing test work reports using company templates and standards
- Maintaining accurate laboratory records and operational records
- Supporting the organisation of shipping and deliveries
- Maintaining inventory of laboratory supplies and updating stock as needed
- Supporting the development or improvement of testing procedures
- Providing support for research and development activities
- Contributing to a safe, tidy and well-organised laboratory environment
What we are looking for
The role would suit someone with previous laboratory, materials-testing or technical experience who is organised, practical and detail-focused. You should be comfortable following defined test methods, recording information accurately and managing your work to meet project schedules.
We are looking for someone who:
- Has relevant laboratory or technical testing experience
- Works safely, methodically and accurately
- Has good organisation and time-management skills
- Can work independently and as part of a small team
- Communicates clearly and works well with colleagues
- Is confident using Microsoft Word and Excel
- Is keen to develop specialist testing skills
Applicants should hold GCSEs in Maths, English and Science, or equivalent, together with relevant vocational training, qualifications or practical experience.
Previous experience in the mining industry or slurry testing is not essential, as training will be provided in our specialist methods.
