Hours: 07:30 – 16:00
Salary: £23,000 – £27,500 per annum
Reports to: Toolroom Manager
The Role
SRD Engineering is looking for an organised and practical Toolroom Assistant to support the day-to-day running of our Toolroom.
Working closely with the Toolroom Manager and Production teams, you will help ensure that tooling, gauges, fixtures and work holding are correctly stored, maintained and available when required. You will also prepare tooling for upcoming production jobs, manage returned tooling and support stock control, purchasing and regrind activities.
This would suit someone who is highly organised, enjoys a hands-on role and is keen to develop their knowledge of tooling and precision engineering within a busy manufacturing environment.
Previous Toolroom or engineering experience would be advantageous, but it is not essential. We are happy to provide training and development for the right person who has a practical approach, strong attention to detail and a genuine willingness to learn.
Key Responsibilities
- Collect, check and process returned tooling from the machine shop, identifying items suitable for re-use, regrind or removal.
- Return usable tooling to the correct storage locations and ensure stock remains clearly identified and organised.
- Prepare and package tooling, gauges, fixtures and work holding required for upcoming works orders.
- Monitor stock levels and promptly report shortages, damaged items or unusual usage to the Toolroom Manager.
- Support stock checks, inventory updates and accurate stock-control records.
- Assist with the regrind process, including identifying, segregating and preparing tooling for regrinding.
- Work with the Toolroom Manager and Production teams to understand priorities and upcoming tooling requirements.
- Respond to routine tooling enquiries from machinists and Production personnel, escalating technical matters where appropriate.
- Support tooling purchasing activities, including raising authorised purchase requests and receiving, checking and storing new tooling.
- Maintain a clean, safe and well-organised Toolroom and contribute ideas for improving stock organisation and Toolroom processes.
What We're Looking For
- Excellent organisation and attention to detail.
- A practical, hands-on approach and willingness to learn.
- Previous experience within a Toolroom, engineering or manufacturing environment would be advantageous but is not essential.
- Reliable and able to manage priorities within a busy manufacturing environment.
- Good communication skills and the ability to work effectively with colleagues across different departments.
- Comfortable using computer-based systems and maintaining accurate records.
- Confidence to identify and raise issues where tooling is missing, damaged or unsuitable.
- An interest in developing knowledge of machining processes, tooling, gauges, fixtures and work holding.
- A positive attitude towards continuous improvement and maintaining high workplace standards.
