Our values define how we work, and we look for people who share them:
- Bring your A game
- Deliver amazing experiences
- Everyone is an innovator
- Have fun and value the team
- Own it!
Being a Principal Product Owner at Box UK
As a Principal Product Owner you will operate at the intersection of business strategy and technical delivery - engaging directly with clients to understand their objectives, shaping solution architecture and product roadmaps, and ensuring our development teams have the clarity they need to build the right thing, right.
This role is ideally suited to someone who's ready to take the next step in their career - perhaps a strong Senior Product Owner or Business Analyst ready to stretch into a highly influential, strategic position. You'll be as comfortable presenting to a senior stakeholder as you are reviewing a technical specification, moving seamlessly between hands-on delivery and big-picture thinking. You'll bring solid experience already, and we'll invest in developing you further as you grow into the full scope of the role.
In this role you will…
- Engage directly with clients to understand their business objectives, translating these into clear functional and technical requirements.
- Act as the primary conduit between clients and delivery teams - ensuring alignment on scope, priorities, and solution design throughout a project.
- Lead solution design workshops and facilitate requirements-gathering sessions with both business and technical stakeholders.
- Produce functional specifications, solution architecture documentation, and other artefacts that support effective delivery.
- Perform core Product Owner activities where necessary - maintaining and prioritising the backlog, writing user stories and acceptance criteria, and making day-to-day scope/trade-off decisions - while also operating strategically: stepping back from the detail to shape and articulate the product roadmap and connect near-term delivery to longer-term direction.
- Evaluate and assess commercially viable solution options - including platform selection, build vs. buy, and integration approach - for web, mobile, and digital service delivery, providing clear recommendations with supporting rationale.
- Bring sufficient technical understanding to engage credibly with infrastructure and architecture discussions, and map business and IT topology (how processes, systems, and platforms connect) to support solution design and planning - partnering with internal technical teams to develop these accordingly.
- Support bid and pre-sales activity, contributing to proposals and estimates where architectural input is required.
- Work closely with project managers, UX designers, and engineers to ensure a coherent, deliverable solution.
- Coach, mentor and develop team members, including supporting employee onboarding, reviewing and evaluating performance, supporting career development and providing opportunities to learn and grow.
- Champion quality and consistency in how we define and deliver solutions across the business.
*Please note this isn’t an exhaustive list, and the role may evolve over time in line with business needs.
For this role the following skills are essential…
- Strategic thinking: You’re able to step back from day-to-day delivery to shape and articulate a coherent product roadmap, connecting near-term decisions to longer-term direction
- Commercial awareness: You understand how to align solutions and strategy to business goals, and are comfortable contributing to bid, pre-sales and proposal activity
- Technical credibility: You’re confident engaging in infrastructure and architecture discussions, with enough technical grounding to map business and IT topology and evaluate solution options — including platform selection, build vs. buy, and integration approach
- Influential communication: You have excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to build credibility and achieve buy-in at all levels, internally and with clients
- Inquisitive/curiousity: You’re able to ask informed and insightful questions to enhance and inform understanding of client and business needs
- Pragmatic advocate: You can balance client business needs with user needs, adding value through practical, workable solutions across concurrent projects
- Team player and mentor: You’re collaborative and solution-orientated, with a genuine commitment to coaching and developing others
- Decisiveness: You integrate logic, data and judgement to make sound, timely decisions
- Organisation & resilience: You prioritise effectively across a fast-paced, multi-project environment, and stays focused and composed under pressure to deliver to a high standard
- Innovation: You’re open to new approaches, tools and ways of working that improve how solutions are delivered
And you will also need…
- Demonstrable commercial experience (typically 5+ years) in Product Ownership, functional architecture, business analysis, or solutions consulting - ideally within a digital agency or consultancy environment, with a track record of delivering successful client outcomes.
- Experience of Agile development practices and working in an Agile environment.
- Experience implementing strategy - within an agency or in-house environment - to improve design and user experience offering.
- Ability to quickly understand complex business domains and translate them into practical, structured solution designs for web applications, websites and mobile apps - covering user journeys, data flows, integrations and platform architecture.
- A solid grounding in web and digital technologies, sufficient to have credible conversations with development teams.
- Experience facilitating workshops and engaging confidently with senior client stakeholders.
- Experience identifying learning and development needs, and coaching and mentoring team members to build enhanced skills and capabilities.
Having experience of these would also be advantageous...
- Experience working with public sector or membership organisations.
- Familiarity with CMS platforms (e.g. Drupal), CRM systems (e.g. CiviCRM, Salesforce), or digital service delivery frameworks.
- Knowledge of UX and user-centred design principles.
- Exposure to enterprise architecture frameworks (e.g. TOGAF)
And in return, you’ll get:
- A salary of up to £55,000 per annum
- 33 days annual leave (including public holidays)
- 5% contributory pension scheme*
- Death in service insurance cover*
- Private medical insurance with AXA PPP Healthcare and Medicash*
- Cycle to Work scheme*
- Perkbox membership*
- Working abroad opportunities, in line with our Working Abroad Policy
- Volunteer time off
