Ringway Jacobs is looking for an experienced Highways Ganger / Team Leader Operative to lead frontline highway maintenance activities and support the safe delivery of essential works across the network. This is a hands-on role where you'll supervise a small operational team, coordinate daily site activities, and ensure maintenance works are completed safely, efficiently, and to the highest standards. You'll play a key role in improving the condition of local highways and delivering excellent service to our clients and communities.
The Role
As a Highways Ganger / Team Leader Operative, you will:
- Lead and supervise a small highways maintenance team on site.
- Plan, coordinate, and allocate daily work activities to ensure efficient delivery of maintenance programmes.
- Carry out a range of highway maintenance tasks, including pothole repairs, patching, drainage works, kerbing, footway repairs, and general highway improvements.
- Ensure all works are completed safely and in accordance with company procedures and industry standards.
- Conduct site inspections and brief teams on work activities, hazards, and control measures.
- Monitor the quality of completed works and ensure defects are addressed promptly.
- Ensure plant, vehicles, materials, and equipment are used safely and effectively.
- Complete daily records, timesheets, inspections, and associated documentation accurately.
- Liaise professionally with the public, clients, and other stakeholders while on site.
- Promote a positive safety culture and report any incidents, near misses, or concerns.
Job Description
About You
We're looking for someone who has:
- Previous experience working within a highways maintenance environment.
- Experience leading, supervising, or mentoring operational teams.
- A strong understanding of highway maintenance practices, materials, and techniques.
- A commitment to maintaining high standards of health, safety, and environmental compliance.
- A full UK driving licence (LGV Class 2 licence would be advantageous).
- The ability to assess risks and implement appropriate control measures on site.
- Strong communication and organisational skills with the ability to motivate others.
- A proactive approach to problem-solving and decision-making.
- The ability to work effectively under pressure and meet programme deadlines.
- Relevant highways maintenance, street works (NRSWA), or plant operation qualifications would be advantageous.
