Location Requirement

All Kinewell roles are based in North East England. Applicants must already be based in the region or be willing to relocate to the North East before starting employment. Relocation costs are not covered by Kinewell.

The Role

R&D Engineer (Energy Systems Modelling): £30k - £45k, depending on skills, qualifications, and experience

Team: Technical Team (Engineering)

We are seeking an engineer, physicist or mathematician with systems modelling expertise and skills in Python programming to join our rapidly growing team.

You will work on the back-end engine code for our modelling and optimisation software solutions, to develop software features and address issues in response to internal and client requirements. As a well-rounded, flexible and an excellent team player you will develop robust algorithms that are computationally efficient. You will have a keen interest in global challenges including energy security and net-zero, and be able to engage with clients as well as internally.

You will be self-motivated, creative, and have a flair for innovation.

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities

· Developing new products and product features in Python, including design definition and user documentation.

· Maintain and develop existing software features

· Undertake R&D activities

· Identify and scope new features and solutions that could form future R&D activities

· Maintain international company presence by participating in conferences and webinars, seeking new opportunities in areas relevant to the company

· Keep up to date with industry challenges

· Utilise our unique products and services, coupled with your own expertise, to deliver consultancy projects

The Person

Knowledge, skills and experience

Essential

· Highly competent in Python programming, including demonstrating good coding practices

· A good understanding of one or more of the following areas:

o Wind yield analysis

o Power systems modelling

o Optimisation algorithms

o Floating wind

o Mooring systems

o Marine engineering

o Cost-benefit analysis modelling

o Energy systems modelling

· A strong mathematical, engineering or physics background

· Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to write specifically and concisely and the ability to communicate effectively with a range of stakeholders

Highly Desirable

· A strong understanding of model-based engineering, the required accuracy for the task in hand, and the sources of error between the real world and the model

· Proven experience in understanding and defining new software requirements

· Proven experience delivering highly uncertain collaborative R&D projects, as well as undertaking independent research

· Competent in C programming

Desirable

· Experience of other programming languages

· Proven experience in the application of data analysis or data science techniques

· Experience working with within the energy sector and in particular, offshore wind

· A good professional network with excellent rapport with relevant potential new clients

· A proven ability to write successful proposals and win new fee-earning work related to your expertise

· Experience managing, coaching or mentoring more junior staff

Qualifications

Essential

· A STEM based degree (2:1 or above) or equivalent in a relevant subject from a highly reputable institution
