We’re offering an exciting opportunity for an experienced Design Manager to join our BIP/Refresh business area in Watkin Jones. This role is ideal for a proactive and commercially minded professional who is passionate about delivering high-quality, innovative design solutions.

As Design Manager, you will lead and coordinate the design process across a diverse portfolio of refurbishment, repositioning, and legacy asset improvement projects within the BIP/Refresh programme. Working throughout the full project lifecycle, you will ensure design solutions are practical, commercially viable, and aligned to both operational requirements and long-term asset performance.

You will be responsible for reviewing and managing proposals from internal and external consultants, challenging design approaches where necessary and identifying innovative, cost-effective solutions that enhance existing buildings and resident environments. A key focus of the role will be balancing design excellence with programme, budget, and operational constraints typically associated with refurbishment and live-environment projects.

In addition, you will play a key role in supporting procurement activities by assessing alternative design solutions put forward by subcontractors, reviewing drawings for compliance with building regulations, and researching new products, materials, and construction methods. Your contribution will help drive innovation, improve efficiency, and support the successful delivery of our developments.

About You

To be successful in this role, you will have an NVQ Level 5 qualification (or equivalent) and solid knowledge of Building Regulations. A strong understanding of JCT (Joint Contracts Tribunal) contracts is also essential. You should be confident in making well-reasoned decisions and have the ability to constructively challenge design concepts and present your point of view clearly.

You’ll need to be proficient in MS Word and Excel, with an intermediate level of experience in AutoCAD and Adobe Acrobat. Experience with high-rise developments and knowledge of the residential-for-rent market will be highly advantageous.
