Community Navigator Job Description
Introduction
The Independent Living Association is seeking a highly motivated, flexible, and experienced professional with a proven track record in delivering person‑centred support through casework and collaboration. We are looking for an excellent communicator and listener who can think creatively to solve problems and manage their workload effectively. The successful candidate will oversee a caseload of individuals and confidently prepare and present information to a diverse range of stakeholders. This role provides an opportunity to go beyond the scope of the work already being carried out with our core service SDS Forth Valley and our Supporting in the Right Direction Project by extending the current remit and enhancing the possibilities for people to experience a whole system approach to both universal services and statutory funded support.
Job Purpose
Working predominately in the Clackmannanshire rural areas the Community Navigator will support individuals in accessing the services, resources, and opportunities they need to improve their wellbeing. Working closely with health, social care, and community organisations, the postholder will provide person‑centred guidance, help people overcome barriers, and empower them to build confidence, independence, and connection within their community over all aspects of the lives.
The Community Navigator role is a Scottish Government funded initiative and some liaison and reporting with other associated partners will be necessary.
Key Responsibilities
1. Person-Centred Support

Work one‑to‑one with individuals to understand their needs, priorities, and life outcomes.

Provide information, guidance, and practical support to help people access relevant services (e.g., housing, benefits, healthcare, mental health, training, social groups).

Assist individuals in navigating complex systems and overcoming barriers such as digital exclusion, confidence issues, or lack of information.
2. Community Engagement

Maintain an up‑to‑date understanding of local support networks, voluntary groups, statutory services, and community assets.

Build strong working relationships with partner organisations to ensure a coordinated holistic support.

Work closely with our SDS Forth Valley service to better implement social care duties helping individuals to challenge and overcome barriers to social care and independent living beyond our current remit

Liaise with our SIRD team in raising awareness of the service via their community events, meetings, and outreach sessions.
3. Advocacy & Empowerment

Support individuals to advocate for themselves and make informed decisions.

Where appropriate, act as an advocate to ensure people’s voices are heard and their rights are protected.

Encourage confidence-building and independence, enabling individuals to participate fully in community life.
4. Case Management & Record Keeping

Manage a caseload effectively, ensuring timely and high‑quality support.

Maintain accurate and confidential records using agreed client recording systems.

Monitor progress, gather feedback, and contribute to evaluation reports.
5. Safeguarding & Professional Practice
-
Identify and respond appropriately to safeguarding concerns in line with local policies.

Work within professional boundaries and uphold organisational values.

Participate in supervision, training, and continuous professional development.

Work closely with our SDS Forth Valley service in understanding the relevant legislation and use this as the basis for challenging non conformance
Person Specification
Essential
-
Knowledge of social care legislation, and the ability to interpret a variety of interlinked legislation

Experience working with individuals or communities in a support, guidance, or outreach role.

Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to build rapport and communicate effectively with diverse groups.

Understanding of local services, social issues and barriers affecting vulnerable people and their families.

Ability to manage a caseload, prioritise effectively, and work independently.

Commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusive practice.

Proficient IT and administrative skills, including accurate record keeping.

Use of car and be mobile throughout Forth Valley area
