In the heart of East London, home of Billingsgate fish market, E Pelliccis cafe and the Columbia Road Flower Market sit our very popular Plaistow and Barking practices, and they are looking for an additional vet who thrives in a busy GP branch environment but is also looking for that invaluable work life balance in a 3-day week role.
About your new role!
If you like variety and consistency rolled into one then this is the role for you, working 1 day in Plaistow alongside a senior vet (Tuesday), and 2 days in Barking sole charge (Thursday and Friday) building your own client base. If you wished for extra hours on the Wednesday, we would be happy to explore this for you.
Our new team member will be no stranger to fast paced GP branch life and has a cool head on those more challenging days. In addition to your patients being your priority, you will be client focused gaining that invaluable trust. Between the 2 sites You will be working alongside like-minded established teams who communicate openly and collaboratively, including a senior vet, a part-time vet, senior RVN, RVN, and trainee nurses.
Our Plaistow practice has supported the local community for years, providing invaluable diagnostic and surgical care, and being ISFM accredited they have a passion for feline welfare.
In addition to digital and dental x-ray, Plaistow also has ultrasound facilities for applicants with a keen interest in diagnostic imaging.
Support is never far away, with day-to-day operational needs provided by our integral regional managers, and for clinical support our highly experienced head vets. For anything more advanced the practices are supported by Wanstead 24-hour hour hospital, for internal referrals or OOH care and hospitalisation.
This role is Tuesday (8 hours), Thursday (8 hours) and Friday (10 hours) and includes a 1:4 branch Saturday and 1:8 Sunday rotation in Wanstead Hospital. You will be rota d to 1 bank holiday per year and be included in the last resort on-call rotation.
With Barking being a sole charge position, we are looking for a vet who can confidently provide a full GP service. Having a bias in surgery and dentals would be a bonus for the branch due to its caseload! In addition to digital x-ray, the practice is also equipped with dental x-ray to aid in your oral cases.
As a branch veterinary surgeon, some of your duties will include:
- Carry out consultations, thoroughly examining all pets presented and making management and treatment recommendations which are based on best practice and are evidence-based and in accordance with GVG protocols.
- Perform GP surgery on cases as appropriate and within boundaries of personal competence and limitation of overnight care.
- Maintain, prescribe and dispense all medications in accordance with appropriate current medicines legislation and RCVS guidance.
- Record accurate and thorough clinical notes and ensure that pets histories are accurate comprehensive and useful to colleagues.
- Be prepared to refer cases in a timely manner, in the first instance to a GVG Hospital, when there is an inability to undertake a case for whatever reason.
- Help to maintain a respectful and collaborative team environment
When at Barking in the sole charge capacity, there will be additional duties to support the day to day running of the clinic.
Commuting to work:
Plaistow is surrounded by plenty of transport links, including Upton Park on the circle line (the yellow line) and is a 10-minute walk away, which goes through London Liverpool Street where you can pick up most other tube/train lines.
If commuting via public transport to Barking, the practice is a mere 6-minute walk from the Barking overground and circle line, making all other areas of London easily accessible.

The salary band for this split role averaging 29.4 hours per week inclusive of weekend rotation and OOH is £40,425 to £52,920 (£55,000 to £72,000 FTE) depending on prior experience and allowing room for professional growth within the role.
