Full job description

We are looking for a reliable, experienced Chef to join us at The Old Pheasant, an 11-bedroom country pub and inn in Glaston, Rutland.

We are not a fine-dining kitchen and we don't pretend to be one.

Our food is about good, honest pub favourites, cooked well, served generously and consistently. We keep the menu deliberately manageable and focus on giving our guests good food at sensible prices.

We are looking for someone who enjoys that kind of kitchen.

The role

You will be working in a small team and will need to be comfortable taking responsibility for the kitchen and running services independently.

The role will include:

Preparing and cooking our pub menu to a consistent standard
Running breakfast, lunch and evening services as per schedule
Preparing for upcoming services and maintaining good stock levels
Keeping food waste and portion control under control
Maintaining excellent food hygiene and kitchen standards
Receiving and checking deliveries
Working alongside the owner and the wider front-of-house team
Helping us keep the kitchen organised, calm and efficient

Who we are looking for

We are less interested in impressive job titles and more interested in finding the right person.

You will suit us if you:

Have solid experience working as a chef in a pub, hotel or similar kitchen
Can confidently run a service without needing constant supervision
Are organised and reliable
Understand portion control, food cost and waste
Take pride in keeping a clean, well-run kitchen
Work well as part of a small team
Enjoy cooking straightforward food properly
Want a stable role rather than constantly chasing the next kitchen

Hours & pay

This is a permanent position of approximately 35–40 hours per week.

Pay: £14.50–£15.50 per hour, depending on experience.

Exact working pattern can be discussed with the right person. Weekend work will form part of the role, with hours ranging from breakfast shift to dinner shift.

Optional accommodation

For someone who would benefit from it, live-in accommodation may be available on site.

This is completely optional and can be discussed separately.

The Old Pheasant is a busy independent country pub and 11-bedroom inn in the Rutland countryside.

We are not trying to become a gastro pub. We know what we want to be: a welcoming country inn serving good, affordable food to residents, locals and visitors.
