About Us
The Wild Mane Project is a not-for-profit organisation providing equine-assisted learning and wilderness-based programmes for children, young people and adults. We believe in creating a safe, welcoming outdoor environment where people can learn, grow and reconnect with nature through practical experiences alongside our ponies.
As a small organisation, everyone plays an important part in keeping the site running smoothly.
Purpose of the Role
To assist with the maintenance, repair and upkeep of The Wild Mane Project's land, facilities and equipment, while also supporting the day-to-day care of our ponies. This is a varied, hands-on role suited to someone who enjoys practical outdoor work and is willing to turn their hand to a wide range of tasks.
Main Responsibilities
- Maintain fencing, gates and paddock boundaries.
- Carry out general repairs to buildings, shelters and equipment.
- Assemble sheds, field shelters and other outdoor structures.
- Help maintain safe, tidy and presentable grounds.
- Poo pick paddocks and activity areas.
- Assist with feeding, watering and other routine pony care.
- Move hay, bedding, fencing materials and equipment.
- Strim, cut back vegetation and undertake general land maintenance.
- Help prepare activity areas before sessions and restore them afterwards where required.
- Report maintenance issues, safety concerns or damage promptly.
- Work safely around participants, volunteers, staff and animals.
- Carry out other reasonable duties appropriate to the role.
Person SpecificationEssential
- Practical maintenance or DIY skills.
- Able to work independently and use initiative.
- Reliable, honest and trustworthy.
- Physically able to carry out manual outdoor work.
- Comfortable working outdoors throughout the year.
- Willing to work around ponies and livestock.
- Good awareness of health and safety.
Desirable
- Experience of fencing, landscaping or general estate maintenance.
- Experience working around horses or other livestock.
- Experience using hand and power tools.
- Full UK driving licence.
Training
Training will be provided where required, including site procedures and safe working around ponies.
Health & Safety
The postholder is responsible for working safely, following all policies and procedures, wearing appropriate personal protective equipment where required, and helping to maintain a safe environment for participants, colleagues, volunteers and animals.
