Full job description

This is an excellent opportunity if you are looking to develop your skills working with adults and children. Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has an exciting opportunity for an Occupational Therapist to join our well established Band 5 rotation. This post is ideal if you are newly qualified or an existing Band 5.

We are offering a rotational Band 5 post with opportunities to work across a variety of clinical areas, including:

Adult inpatient orthopaedics (Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre)

Paediatric orthopaedics (Oxford Children’s Hospital)

Specialist Surgery Inpatient Ward (West Wing, John Radcliffe Hospital)

Each rotation is for a period of 8 months.

The post holder will manage a caseload and plan and undertake occupational therapy assessments and interventions with support from senior colleagues.

Work as an effective member of the multi-disciplinary teams and work autonomously.

To stay up to date with evolving evidence-based practice.

Maintain accurate records.

To be responsible for maintaining and developing their own continued professional development, for them to progress and underpin their interventions and assessment by evidence and theoretical knowledge.

Participate in weekend and bank holiday rota.

Participate in service developments and projects.

Delegate and support unregistered workforce and students.

In each area, the post holder will be supported by a clinical supervisor and will join our friendly and enthusiastic team that strives to provide high-quality, person-centred care. All newly qualified staff will be enrolled onto our OUH Preceptorship Programme in their first year of employment.

We fully support regular supervision and professional development and use Value Based Appraisals to enable you to grow and learn throughout the rotations. We work within a large teaching Trust which encourages staff development, research, and quality improvements.

Clinical

To undertake assessment, treatment, education and provide support to people referred to the Occupational Therapy Service (including advice to carers) under the supervision of the Senior OT.

2. To work autonomously when required, reporting to Senior Occupational Therapist.

To formulate and implement treatment plans on an individual and group basis, identifying patient needs and goals using sound clinical reasoning.

To assist and present Patient Education sessions.

To assist the Occupational Therapy Team Leader or Senior Occupational Therapist in the day-to-day supervision and delegation of routine occupational therapy activities to the OT assistants or technicians where appropriate.

To assess for and provide adaptive equipment in line with departmental guidelines.

To record all occupational therapy intervention in compliance with the OUH, RCOT and NHS guidelines.

To continuously evaluate occupational therapy intervention and to maintain and develop a high standard of clinical and professional practice at all times.

To participate in the Weekend/Bank Holiday working rota as required.

To participate in clinical supervision and identify own supervision needs.

Communication

To liaise with all members of the multidisciplinary team, patients, carers, community support services including attendance at ward rounds and case conferences to facilitate safe and effective discharges and treatment programmes for patients, and to report on occupational therapy assessment and treatment progress.

To liaise with the Occupational Therapy Team Leader or Senior Occupational Therapists in the management and prioritisation of the caseload.

To promote good working relationships with all disciplines within the OUH and to liaise and network with RCOT Specialist Sections as appropriate.

To represent Occupational Therapy at multidisciplinary meeting and promote the profile of Occupational Therapy.

To participate in staff meetings, Band 5 OT Support Group and other service related meetings.

Management

To assist the Occupational Therapy Team Leader and Senior Occupational Therapists in ensuring that all occupational therapy equipment in the Occupational Therapy department is stored safely and maintained in safe working order, and that a tidy environment is maintained at all times.

To demonstrate effective time management skills, managing own caseload and prioritising workload.

To record departmental statistics and equipment records using the Trust information systems and provide the Occupational Therapy Team Leader with any data as required.

To participate in regular supervisory sessions and the individual staff performance and development review process, setting personal and service objectives, developing a personal development plan and professional portfolio.

Education and Training

To have an awareness of current trends in treatment techniques and professional issues and to participate in active learning by appropriate study and by attending therapy and in-service training programmes as appropriate.

To be involved in the induction and orientation programmes of new occupational therapy staff/students to the Occupational Therapy Service.

To complete relevant Practice Educator Training and be actively involved in student placement training.

To welcome visitors to the department and discuss the Occupational Therapy Service in an informed and appropriate manner.

To assist the Occupational Therapy Team Leader in the development and maintenance of a high profile Occupational Therapy Service within the OUH through effective communication, teaching and presentations.

Research

To liaise with other colleagues who may require assistance in research and audit projects.

To keep up to date with relevant research and issues relevant to the clinical area and aim to provide evidence based care.
