About us

The UCL Department of Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering is one of the largest departments of its kind in the UK. We're proud to host internationally leading research groups that cover a broad range of activities and are spread across several sites. Our staff and students have a diverse range of interests and expertise, covering many areas of physics, engineering, medicine, physiology, computer science, and mathematics. We focus on high-quality academic research to identify new technologies and methods for diagnosing, treating, and managing diseases using medical imaging, physiological monitoring, and implanted devices. We also offer a range of undergraduate and postgraduate degrees.

About the role

Main purpose of the job

The main purpose of this role is to contribute to and support our teaching in the Medical Physics BSc and MSci programmes, including teaching in core Physics modules. The post holder may have some elements of involvement at every level of our programmes. This will include, for instance, some fundamental modules (UG Y1-Y2) in mathematics, physics (e.g. thermal physics, classical mechanics, electricity and magnetism), CAD and FEA, and/or introductory medical physics modules (e.g. medical imaging, physics of the human body, etc.), and potentially specialist (UG Y3-Y4) modules related to the candidate’s technical background. The successful candidate will lead teaching sessions and workshops, contribute to and lead some of the student assessment, and participate in outreach activities for the Medical Physics programme. Also, they will potentially supervise UG individual or group projects.

About you

The successful applicant will contribute to the implementation of a high-quality curriculum and will assist in the development of learning materials. They will also act as personal tutors and casework lead, i.e. monitoring students’ engagement, attendance and progress, and overseeing student cases that require additional support.

The role holder will have an excellent level of technical background in Physics, with desirable experience in Medical Physics. They will be a motivated individual, natural and effective communicator, with an interest in higher education.

To contribute to the development of appropriate teaching materials to ensure content and methods of delivery meet learning objectives.

To contribute to the ongoing development and design of the curriculum, in a manner that supports a research-led and scholarly approach to student learning.

To undertake limited administrative duties as requested by the Medical Physics programme director or the director of studies.
