Advanced Innovative Engineering is looking for an experienced Design and Combustion CFD Engineer to join our team in Lichfield. You must be a professional, dynamic, involved person making critical analyses and decisions. You are expected to be part of a small management team and contribute at all times.
Reporting to the Head of Engineering, you will support AIE in designing and verifying new innovations for the Wankel Rotary Engine power units supplied to Customers within the aerospace transport and power generation markets.
As part of the close-knit team, the Design and Combustion CFD Engineer will be expected to perform the following tasks:
- Interpret and translate Customer and Product requirements to system and component specifications

Determine design options and develop appropriate verification strategies to demonstrate system/component compliance with specifications, industry standards and legislative demands

Provide Design status and Design Review documentation
- Experience with CFD Ansys suite or alternative tool kits of interest

Conduct flow studies to minimize DP and noise in induction systems
-
Conduct flow studies in exhaust systems to optimize performance. Experience in developing flow for acoustic performance is an interest
-
Flow analysis to optimize fan performance and efficiency
-
Flow analysis of the liquid cooling system for minimum DP and max heat rejection potential. Optimizing the engine cooling jacket for a balanced thermal environment with low DP. Flow analysis for (engine driven) coolant pump impeller and housing geometries

Conduct 1D analysis (or hand calculations) to determine cooling system sizing and layout. Determine requirements for Radiator sizing and DP, pump and flow rate; Fan and air flow rate and system routing and DP

Conduct a 3D simulation to optimize the liquid cooling system for heat rejection. This may also include ‘engine bay’ flow and thermal analysis (some applications may have a degree of engine encapsulation)

Conduct thermal and flow studies for air-cooled engine options. Develop cooling fin/matrix geometries appropriate for the duty and heat rejection demands

Conduct combustion (efficiency) related analysis for:

Fuel injector location and spray pattern DoE
-
Charge ‘swirl’ and mix DoE
-
Port vs direct injection studies
-
Rotor (or cylinder head) ‘pocket geometry DoE
-
Stoichiometric and Stratified fuel injection studies
-
Help drive the test and development activities correlating analytical models and verifying improvement strategies.

Interface with the Design Engineers to ensure robust transfer and adoption of ideas
- Minimum experience of 5 years in a similar analysis role
-
Master or higher Degree in a Physics or Engineering discipline

Knowledge of material properties appropriate for engine and ancillary systems
-
Understanding of IC engine operation and efficiency improvement drivers
- Work well within a small team and can flex to meet Business demand

Attention to detail is essential whilst planning and keeping sight of the bigger picture. You must be good at problem-solving with an ability to work to fixed deadlines.
Thirty-eight hours a week, Monday to Thursday 8.30 am to 5.30 pm (30-minute lunch) Friday 8.30 am to 12.30 pm.
21 days plus statutory bank holidays
