About the role
SZC is ultimately owned by two shareholders, EDF and HMG. The shareholders hold their
investments in SZC through NNB Holdings Company (SZC) Limited. The two shareholders'
shareholdings will change over the current shareholding arrangements.
The shareholders will fund SZC until the Financial Close through equity per the approved schedule and
budget. SZC’s business is to design, finance, construct, commission, operate, maintain, and eventually
decommission the nuclear power plant and related infrastructure (including activities relating to hydrogen,
direct air capture and desalination) at Sizewell C in Suffolk. The principal objectives of the current
development phase of the SZC project are to agree and implement the Capital Raise Plan, including
completing an equity and debt raise, agree the core supply chain contracts, and obtain the regulatory
permits and licences required for the construction phase of the Project (including the core environmental
permits and nuclear site licence).
Before the government investment decision, SZC operated as part of EDF in the Nuclear Development
business unit and was staffed by EDF colleagues and independent contractors now transferring to direct
employment at SZC. It is setting itself up as an organisation capable of delivering a new nuclear power
plant, from investment cases and funding to construction, commissioning, operations, maintenance, and
decommissioning.
What you'll be doing
The Senior Materials Technician supports the Civil Works Alliance by carrying out sampling, testing,
inspection, and quality verification of concrete and associated materials across civils, piling, plastic, and
CFA operations. The role ensures compliance with project specifications, design requirements, safety
standards, and regulatory frameworks to maintain construction quality for the Sizewell C Enabling &
Earthworks package.
Who we're looking for
Essential
- Experience in concrete and civil engineering materials testing within major infrastructure or heavy
civils projects.
- Understanding of laboratory and field-testing procedures.
- Experience supporting piling / CFA / groundworks operations.
- Working knowledge of relevant British Standards (e.g., BS EN 206, BS 8500).
- Ability to interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and quality documentation.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy in recording results.
- CSCS card or ability to obtain one.
Desirable
- Experience working on nuclear, rail, or regulated infrastructure projects.
- Prior involvement in large-scale civils projects (tunnels, earthworks, reinforced concrete).
- Knowledge of Nuclear Safety Culture principles.
- Experience with digital quality systems (BIM 360, Fieldview).
- UKAS-accredited lab experience.
4. Qualifications
- NVQ Level 2 or 3 in Construction Materials Testing, Civil Engineering, or equivalent.
- Training in concrete or geotechnical materials testing.
- Additional certifications (e.g., UKAS training, PASMA, Confined Space) beneficial.
