The Department of Geography is rapidly developing its research profile in the areas of meteorology and climate science and has a very active Climate research cluster. This includes a new NERC-funded 24-month PDRA researcher opportunity on “Impact of Aerosol-Cloud Interactions on Greenland’s Ice Melting Rates”, under the direction of Edward Hanna, Professor of Climate Science and Meteorology. The project will involve running and refining a regional climate model with enhanced satellite observations to evaluate the impacts of improved model representation of aerosol-cloud interactions on Greenland Ice Sheet melt and mass loss projections for the rest of this century.
This project involves close collaboration with the project PI and other involved researchers at the University of Oxford, as well as overseas Project Partners at the University of Liège and Utrecht University.
Here we have an exciting opportunity for a Postdoctoral Research Associate (PDRA) with experience of statistical analysis and/or modelling, computer programming and preferably some meteorology/climate/glaciology background, to join our growing team. Some research background and expertise on the Greenland Ice Sheet and/or regional climate modelling would be ideal. The PDRA will work directly on the NERC project to help push back the frontiers of knowledge and understanding in the topical and high-impact area of climatic drivers of the Greenland Ice Sheet melt. Although the NERC project is the primary focus, the successful candidate may suggest their own ideas or topic of research to co-develop an idea that could lead to further funding. We expect the project to begin on 1 April 2027.
You will have recently finished or be finishing a PhD or PDRA position and have a desire to work in the Department of Geography/Climate research cluster.
