Café and Dining Room Assistant
The Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham
We are looking for a hardworking, reliable and enthusiastic Café and Dining Room Assistant to join our Catering Team, working across Norton’s Café Bar and the Pilgrim Refectory.
The role involves delivering excellent customer service to pilgrims and visitors, preparing and serving food and drinks, maintaining high standards of cleanliness and helping to ensure the smooth day-to-day running of our catering facilities.
Responsible to: Catering ManagerSupervised by: Catering ManagerHours: Shifts will vary according to the needs of the business and may range between 8.00am and 11.00pm.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
The successful candidate will:
- Provide excellent, friendly and helpful customer service to pilgrims and visitors.
- Take customer orders and serve food, snacks and light meals.
- Prepare and serve hot, cold and alcoholic drinks.
- Operate the touchscreen till and handle money accurately and securely.
- Assist with cashing-up procedures as required.
- Keep the Pilgrim Refectory dining areas, Norton’s Café Bar and outside seating areas clean, tidy and welcoming.
- Clear and clean tables and undertake washing-up as required.
- Clean down service, kitchen and customer areas at the end of the day.
- Restock drinks, snacks and other supplies when required.
- Assist in the kitchen when necessary, including food preparation, cleaning and washing-up.
- Serve meals and assist with the operation of the Refectory as required.
- Respond to customer and pilgrim enquiries in a polite, professional and helpful manner.
- Support pilgrims and visitors and, wherever possible and practicable, help to meet their needs.
- Report any problems with food, cooking or catering equipment promptly to the Catering Manager.
- Comply with all relevant Health & Safety, Food Hygiene and Environmental Health requirements and Company procedures.
- Undertake any training necessary to enable you to fulfil the requirements of the role.
- Carry out any other reasonable duties or requests as directed by the Catering Manager or Management Team.

Experience
Previous experience is desirable, particularly in:
- Working with members of the public.
- Customer service and customer interaction.
- Café, restaurant, bar or other hospitality environments.
- Using touchscreen tills and handling cash.
Touchscreen till experience would be an advantage, although appropriate training can be provided.
About the Shrine
The Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham is a Christian Pilgrimage Centre set within extensive grounds, with accommodation for approximately 200 pilgrims at any one time.
The Pilgrim Refectory is a large modern catering facility with a dining room seating approximately 180 people and a cafeteria seating around 50. The kitchen produces approximately 90,000 meals each year during the season.
It is not a requirement for the post holder to be a member of a church, but they will be expected to be sympathetic to and respectful of the aims, purpose and Christian ethos of the Shrine.
